North Wins Opener Before South Sweeps Doubleheader
The North squad outscored the South 12-8 in Saturday's three hour long, nine inning opener of the 30th. annual Sterling Savings 4A North/South All-Star game in Roseburg.
Sunday, the South squad broke out even more bats, and twice held off North rallys to claim a pair of seven inning wins, 11-9 and 8-5.
Newport's Cody Dordan, fresh off being drafted by the Minneapolis Twins picked up the win despite throwing only the first four innings of the Saturday marathon, as the South could never overcome the 4-3 the North held as Dordan exited. The North added three runs in the top of the fifth, which the South answered in their half of the inning, but another three run effort in the top of the sixth kept the South at bay.
Sunday, the South pounded out 25 of the days 41 hits to sweep the doubleheader. In the first game, the North not only answered the South in the first two innings, but went them one better, opening 4-3 and 6-4 leads. A six run southern outburst in the top of the fourth inning opened a lead the North couldn't overcome, despite a two run rally in the bottom of the seventh.
In the series' conclusion, the South opened a 6-0 advantage in the first three innings, before the North cut it in half in the fourth inning. But they got no closer, and the South claimed the rubber game of the series.
