When it’s an All-Star game, the whole lineup from top-to-bottom is dangerous.
Richie Carmichael and the South All-Stars proved that Saturday in a 6-3 win over the North at Legion Field in the 29th annual Sterling Saving Bank Oregon Class 4A All-Star Baseball Series.
The nine-inning game — one of three meetings between the two teams — was what you’d expect of an All-Star game: sweet hitting, dead-eye pitching and solid fielding.
Both clubs combined for 21 hits, nine strikeouts, and four doubleplays — all turned by the North in the first five innings.
But the star of the game was Carmichael, whose timely triple scored three runs, including the go-ahead run, and put the South ahead for good in the sixth inning.
“I like playing in these games with the competition,” Carmichael said. “I can gauge my skills against kids that are as-good or better than me. ”
Carmichael, who also saw time on the mound, will be attending NCAA Division II Central Washington University to play baseball. The La Grande standout will see time on the field immediately and expects to be a four-year starter for the Wildcats.
“They (Central Washington) are giving me the opportunity to play the infield as well as get in the rotation,” Carmichael said. “They are expecting me to come in as a freshman and make an impact immediately. That’s the reason I chose to go there.”
He went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and threw two perfect innings before being replaced by Mike Mastroiani, who hurled four strong innings in relief.
“All of our pitchers threw well,” South coach Steve Hodges of Sisters said. “For a while our offense was stymied because of the four doubleplays, but once we got out of the doubleplay situations we swung the ball well with runners on base.”
Twelve other South players will be playing collegiate baseball next year: Casey Albright of Hidden Valley will play at Clackamas Community College, Cameron Dixon of Cottage Grove (Colorado School of Mines), Kale Forrester of North Bend (Southwestern Oregon Community College), Ryan Laubacher of Ontario (Treasure Valley Community College), Jordan Lewis of Phoenix (Western Nevada University), Tyler Mais of Siuslaw (Linfield College), Grant Mascolo of Marist (Chemeketa Community College), Anthony Nice of La Grande (Western Washington University), Ethan Ottermiller of North Bend (Pacific Lutheran University), Ryan Robinson of Phoenix (Biola University), and Colton Thomas of Marist (George Fox University).
Six players from the North will play on: Tyler Conklin and Cole Skriver of Newport (Green River Community College), Tom Jaworski of Astoria (Mt. Hood Community College), Hans Lund of Astoria (Linfield), and Riley Falk of Molalla (Western Oregon University).
Conklin went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the North, which had a solid performance across the board, especially defensively. Jaworski and Lund teamed for all four doubleplays.
