South Claims Resers' Oregon All-Star Series

The South All-Stars claimed the Oregon baseball All-Star series, sponsored by Resers', and hosted at Goss Stadium by the Corvallis Knights this past weekend. The series pits the top 5A and 6A graduated seniors from the metro Portland and Columbia Gorge areas as the North against those from the rest of the state as the South, in a best of three format.

The South won Saturday's first game 7-2, behind 3 scoreless innings pitched by Corvallis' Luher Ellenson. The South scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 4-2 lead, and then added 3 insurance runs in the 6th inning. Tualatin's Andrew Schlottman had a pair of hits, and scored once, and Jake Dufault of South Salem and John Carroll from Mt. View added doubles. Six different players had RBIs for the South.

Ellenson had 2 strikeouts in his 3 scoreless innings, and escaped a bases loaded jam with no outs in the 6th inning enroute to the win. South starter J.D. Abbas from Redmond allowed 2 unearned runs in 3 innings, and Tanner Hamilton from North Salem threw a scoreless 7th inning to close out the victory.

No one for the North had more than one hit.

The North bounced back in the nightcap for a 4-3 walkoff win when Jesuit's Matt Decker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Wilson's Gehrett Moser with the winning run. The North had loaded the bases on a 1 out double by Moser, a walk, and a single by Clackamas' Austin Kelly, before Hamilton hit Decker in the back.

Kyle Beam from Hood River doubled and scored earlier, and Kelly had two hits in the game for the North. Hamilton had 2 hits and a run, Roseburg's Tristan Guillen added 2 hits and an RBI, Brent Nielsen of Sheldon added a double, a single, and had an RBI, and Hillsboro's Stefanos Panayiotou had an RBI triple for the South.

South Claims Sunday Rubber Match

The South trailed 2-1 heading into the last of the 8th inning, but shortstop Cooper Stiles from Sheldon drove home the tying and go-ahead runs with a two out double off the left field fence. Stiles had 3 hits total on Sunday.

The North had the tying run on base with 2 outs in the 9th inning, but Westview's Ray Ayo was thrown out trying to steal second for the final out, and the South had the 3-2 win, which claimed the series for the South, after the North had won the previous 2 years, since the series moved to Oregon St.'s Goss Stadium.

Kelly had 2 hits for the North on Sunday, Ellenson pitched 2 more scoreless innings, and got both wins for the South. Ellenson had 4 strikeouts, and also scored a run on Saturday in his only at-bat of the weekend.

Stiles was the South's Most Outstanding Player. He hit .500, going 4 for 8, with a double, 2 RBIs, a run, and a stolen base in the series.

Abbas was named the South's Most Outstanding Pitcher. He gave up no earned runs in 3 innings of Saturday's 7-2 South win, and had three strikeouts.

Westview's Connor Zwetsch was named the North's Most Outstanding Pitcher, having thrown 4 scoreless innings, with 3 strikeouts Sunday.

Kelly hit .444, on a 4 of 9 series, to earn North Most Outstanding Player honors. He had a pair of hits on Sunday, after 2 in Saturday's second game.
