Cubs Claim 70-69 Win Over Upset Minded Cougars
Turner - Second ranked Newport (15-1, 4-0)nearly saw their showdown by the sea Friday with 4A top ranked Central (15-a, 4-0) lose some luster Wednesday in Turner, as Cascade (8-10, 1-3) took the Cubs to double OT, and had the last look at a 14 footer for the win.
Newport's Drew Dinwoodie made only the second of 2 free throws with 4.8 seconds left, but Cascade's Orion Wright was unable to extend his game and career high 24 point night with one more basket, and the Cubs escaped the Cougar Den still tied with the Panthers atop the Oregon West League.
Stuart Bartoldus carried Newport early, with 4 first half 3 pointers, and 16 points. Bartoldus would finish with 23 points for the Cubs. Dinwoodie added 13, and the Dunmoore brothers, Oshay, fresh off sending his football National Letter of Intent to Oregon, and his sophomore brother Yadie both posted 12 point nights.

Newport's Oshay Dunmore scores 2 of his 12
points in overtime against Cascade.
But despite Bartoldus' efforts, the Cougars kept the contest close early, trailing only 18-16 after the first quarter, and 36-35 at halftime.
Newport opened a 7 point, 47-40 lead less than half way through the 3rd quarter, and led 55-49 heading into the 4th period.

Cascade rallied, and tied the game at 59 apiece on Paul Vettrus' 3 pointer with 1:57 left in regulation. A Dinwoodie basket, above, put Newport back ahead, but he then left the door ajar by making only 1 of 2 free throws with 40.3 seconds left.
Vettrus and Dinwoodie exchanged a pair of made free throws, but O. Dunmore had to hammer Kyler Delamarter, who had gotten open in the right corner for a good look at a 3 pointer.
Free throw shooting was Cascade's key to the near upset, as the Cougars made 17 of 18 from the line in regulation, including 3 straight by Delamarter with 12.4 seconds left to force overtime. Both Delamarter, who finished with 18 points, and Vettrus, who had 12 points, were 6 of 6 at the line. However, Cascade made only 1 of 4 in overtime. Newport was 10 of 17 at the line.

Both teams suffered a missed free throw in the first OT, and a Wright rejection, above, kept the game tied, at 67-67, as both teams came up with only 3 points.
Both teams also struggled with ball security in the overtimes, as both tried to shorten the game with spread offenses. Newport was playing without guard Y. Dunmoore, who had fouled out just past midway through the 4th. quarter. However, the turnovers tended to cancel each other out, seting up the last seconds chances for both teams.
