Jones, Schrempf Lead Run that Leds to Win

Washington's all stars, featuring four players who have committed to Division I schools, overcame a strong early effort by the Oregon team, and pulled away in the second half to claim a 101-80 win in the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.

The Oregon team, which had no players headed to Division I schools, made five first half three pointers, and battled to 45-38 lead shortly before halftime, and still held a two point, 45-43 lead at the break.

However, taking a page from the Washington's girls' success, used a big run to break the game open. Washington finished the first half with a 5-0 run, then quickly blew the game open after the break, completing a 22-2 run to take a 13 point lead early in the second half. The Washington all-stars never looked back, and claimed their third win in a row in the series. Oregon still leads the overall series 10-6.

Bellevue's Alex Schrempf, the son of former NBA player Detlef Schrempf, earned game MVP honors for Washington, scoring 18 points and just missing a double double, with nine rebounds. Freddy Wilson from Seattle's Franklin High led all scorers with 24 points, and kicked Washington's transition offense into gear in the second half.

After Oregon's strong early outside shooting, Washington held Oregon to only 1 for 17 from behind the three point arc in the second half.

"We got a lot of good shooters, but we just weren't hitting in the second half," Cameron McCaffrey from Century High said.

"It's the triple 'E' effect of enthusiasm, effort and energy," Washington coach Nalin Sood explained. "The guys on the bench got fired up, which translates to more energy, and that is tough to match when you have athletes like these."

"We attacked more in the second half, and doing a better job guarding Oregon in transition led to out doing better in transition" Sood said.

Washington also outrebounded Oregon 59-43.

Sunset's Michael Holton Jr. led Oregon with 15 points, and Tyrone Phillips from Jefferson and Brett Ball of Hillsboro both had 12 points. Taylor Braun of Newberg rounded out Oregon's four players in double digits, with 10.

McCaffrey explained that Washington simply presented too many tough matchups. "They were just bigger and stronger than us. We really weren't able to get a body on them. They had a little overall talent edge on us, but we could play with them as long as we play as hard. We showed it in the fist half. But it's tough to come back when they make a run like that when you can't knock down shots."
