USA South Subdues Wiltjer's Canada 113-99

Team USA South's P.J. Hairston put on a dazzling first half shooting exhibition to counter Canada's Khem Birch in a first half filled with rim rattling dunks, stuffs of would-be dunks and deadly shooting from several feet in back of even the NBA three point line. The frantic pace stunned the Canadian team who trailed 65-47 at the half and on this night the mojo never moved in their direction. Jesuit's Kyle Wiltjer had another solid performance with 15 points and 8 rebounds for Canada. In the other semifinal, steady play from USA Midwest kept INSEP (France) at bay the entire game to make it an all USA final tomorrow night at 8pm at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. These are two teams filled with players who will be taking their games to the NBA in a few years.

Canada Downs Team USA East In Double OT Dandy

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by Cipole Friday, 06 August 2010 22:27    Hits: 516

Remember the name Khem Birch. All week long I'd circled names as budding NBA talent but didn't see his name coming. The USA East squad had two of the top ten high schoolers in the United States in James McAdoo and Rakeem Christmas but they couldn't hold off the better two bangers underneath, Jesuit's Kyle Wiltjer and Birch, who combined for 56 points and 38 rebounds to lead Team Canada to an exciting 105-100 double overtime thriller.

Stellar Hoop a Given at Nike Global Challenge

Written by Don Francis Wednesday, 28 July 2010 16:40    Hits: 543

(*update-Westviews Adam Kuemper has been added to the United States West roster. A fourth U.S team was recently added when Nigeria's team ran afoul with Customs and couldn't get visa's secured. This makes the first round of play all U.S. vs "Other Countries")

Last year them dang 'furiners,' including one Kyle "the Canuck" Wiltjer, beat up on the best high school players in the ol' U. S. of A. as foreign teams took two of three openers from U.S squads. This season, once again, all the top high schoolers from around the globe will lace them up and git' after it at Liberty High School in the Fourth Annual Nike Global Challenge. Two years ago, the number one pick in the NBA draft, John Wall, wowed em. Last year North Carolina's Harrison Barnes exploded for 46 points in a dominant performance. Who will dazzle this year? I keep saying it, the best sporting deal in the state of Oregon is the $5 Admission for a full day of amazing basketball. Mark August 6th to 8th on your calendar right now. Kyle "The Canuck" returns to boot.

Bill Cowell, who was the most basketball successful coach in Grants Pass High history during his first stint, from 1996 thru 2006, is returning to the sidelines for the Cavemen.

Cowell, who amassed a 180-83 record in his prior ten year run, and reached the sweet 16 seven times, replaces Scott Gottula. BOYS RECAP – Washington 116, Oregon 109

(Portland) – James Madison University bound 6’2 Andre Winston and Virginia bound 6'6 Joe Harris both scored 17 second half points as the Washington team used a 14-3 run after Saint Mary’s bound Stephen Holt went out with a knee injury to pull away from a hot shooting Oregon squad for a 116-109 win in a back and forth, fast paced battle in the 17th annual Les Schwab Northwest Shootout on Saturday night at the Chiles Center on University of Portland’s campus.  Oregon led 59-54 at halftime, and 71-58 just three-minutes into the second half, but Washington used its superior size and quickness to wear the Oregon team down for its fourth straight victory in the series.  Oregon still owns the overall edge, 10-7.  Washington’s first run, 20-6 over five-minutes, gave them the lead, then a 14-3 run over a four-minute stretch gave Washington an eight point lead, 100-92, with six-minutes left.  Oregon pulled within three points twice in the final two minutes, but Washington closed the door by getting easy baskets and making foul shots.  Washington grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, leading to 24 second chance points, with most of them coming right at the rim.  Winston showed some nice quickness and ball handling and a tremendous pull-up game, scoring 24 points on 9 of 17 field goal shooting, making 2 of 3 three-pointers.  “Andre is blessed offensively,” Washington coach Bill Bakamus said.  “He has a multitude of ways that he can beat you.  Driving, pulling up, taking it to the basket.”  Idaho bound 6’5 Stephen Madison led the Oregon team with a game-high 27 points, making 3 of 7 three-pointers.

U.S. Team Survives Kanter's Performance, 101-97

Terrance Jones Plays Big Down the Stretch

(Portland) – Enes Kanter stole the show for the World Select Team, but couldn’t get the win, as the USA Junior National Team came back from a dismal third quarter to pull out a 101-97 win in the 13th edition of the Nike Hoops Summit at the Rose Garden on Saturday night.   Top recruits, Harrison Barnes and Jared Sullinger, led the U.S. team in an inspired fourth quarter performance and Jefferson’s Terrance Jones made 4 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to close out the victory for Team U.S.A.  Trailing by 12 points entering the final quarter, Barnes and Sullinger took over for the U.S., scoring 14 straight points during one stretch as the USA went on a 21-6 run over the first five minutes of the final quarter to take control of the game, allowing Kyrie Irving and Jones to close it out from there.   Irving, a 6’2 point-guard headed to Duke, attacked the basket for three easy hoops in the final three minutes and played tremendous defense when the U.S. extended to full-court pressure.  Kanter, a 6’10 forward from Turkey that is headed to Kentucky, impressed everyone in the building, setting a new Nike Hoops Summit scoring record with 34 points, breaking Dirk Nowitzki’s record of 33.  Kanter added 13 rebounds, making 13 of 21 field goals and 8 of 9 free throws in 24 minutes of action.

USA's Best Versus The World's Best

Terrance Jones is Lone Local Player on USA Team

(Portland) - The Hoops Nike Summit returns to the Rose Garden at 7 p.m. on Saturday night for another exciting matchup of young talent from around the United States and the rest of the World (9 different countries are represented on the 10 man World Select squad).  The USA Men’s Junior National Select Team is loaded with talent (the top-6 ranked players by ESPN scouting) and is eager to avenge last year’s 97-89 loss to a World Select Team (U19) that features two 7-footers and three players listed at 6’10.   Jefferson High School’s 6’8 Terrance Jones, the 13th ranked player by ESPN, is one of three uncommitted seniors playing in the game.  Brandon Knight, a 6’3 point guard from Tennessee, is the top-rated unsigned senior.  The other unsigned senior is 6’4 guard Cory Joseph from Canada, who plays on the World Select Team.  You have to wonder if the exodus of five underclassmen and three seniors from Kentucky will sway any of the top remaining unsigned players to the Wildcats, who obviously have plenty of open minutes available in it’s dribble drive offense that highlights individual talent.

(6A Boys - Teams to Watch)

It will be an interesting start to the 2010-2011 season as 3A powers, Horizon Christian and Dayton, take their shot at the 6A and 5A’s best during the Les Schwab Invitational in December.  Many talented players return for some of the 6A’s top teams and I’m sure the Jefferson players will be hungry to try for an unprecedented fourth-straight state championship in 5A.
