The recent addition of Stephen Madison, who paddled across the Columbia River is big. The 6'6 versatile wing who played for Prairie last year will be wearing the blue and gold of Jefferson next season and coupled with Terrence Jones, it's hard to come up with a better one-two punch even on a national level. Which begs the question. Is Jeff now one of the best teams to ever come out of the state? Are they arguably one of the best high school teams in the nation? Certainly you could make a case for Jefferson to be the best public high school basketball team in the nation. Or getting a bit more picayune, the Demo's are hands down the best public high school with an enrollment under 550 on the planet.

Jeff Gets Madison
No, this isn't a report on a pre-season PIL 5A scrimmage. But the two time defending 5A State Champion Democrats (never mind 5A PIL champions) probably will fulfill that headline, along with a lot of others, in the coming season, after adding another weapon to their arsenal.
Stephen Madison, one of the top high school basketball players last year in southwest Washington, and rated a two star recruit by Scout.com, has transferred to Jefferson High School for his senior season, according to Madison's father.

This team is one Muhammed Ali could have been proud of. When you have a one-two knock out punch like the USA East had in Kyrie Irving and Josh Selby, you can play a little Rope-A-Dope through the first half and into the third quarter to give the opponents a false sense of security. However, after letting Brazil hang around until the fourth quarter before KO'ing them, Canada proved a foxier foe with some guards who were also crafty and it almost cost the East team. A frenzied rally led by Irving in the fourth quarter proved just enough as the lead see-sawed before holding on for the 105-104 win in the championship of the third annual Nike Global Showcase at Liberty High School.

Nevermind that it was a consolation game. If you were lucky, it will be one of those games you remember for the rest of your life. After a lackluster first half from the boys in red, white and blue, Team USA Midwest and FMP Serbia gave the fans a gem of a game as Harrison Barnes went off for 36 of his 46 points in second half points to give his team a 103-94 overtime win. Coupled with Team USA West South's win over Team Asia, it sets up nicely for a 4pm game for Fourth Place that pits a re-energizedTerrance Jones team against Barnes. The Final will be a North American affair as Team USA East and Canada will play for the Championship at 8pm at Liberty High School.

Repeat after me "basketball is an international game.' It took the USA East squad in the nightcap to atone for a shocking and disappointing showing by the other two USA squads Friday night at the Nike Global Showcase. The East win saved face and put at least one of three United States teams in the semifinals tomorrow evening at Liberty High School after running by Team Asia 135-91. The Showcase features the worlds finest players under 20 years old going against the best United States high schoolers selected from different Nike Skills Camps.
The talk of the tournament was the first game where USA Midwest was upset on a last second shot by Team Senegal 66-65. Led by arguably the best player in the entire tournament in 6'6 swingman Harrison Barnes, Team Midwest trailed at the half 40-32 before going into the fourth quarter trailing 50-47. The team from Africa looked better on this night though and deserved the win. They outrebounded Midwest by an alarming 65-40 margin and had a 29-15 edge on the O-boards. Neither team shot well but Senegal was paced by Papa Samba Ndao with 17 points and eight rebounds and Gorgui Sy Dieng with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Midwest's Barnes had 20 points and seven rebounds. '

This year Jefferson's Terrence Jones is ready to make his mark.
The family and friends of Terrence Jones were just a little dismayed last season at the Nike Global Showcase. The talented 6’8 Jefferson post had a front row seat playing for the USA II team that won it all last season. The key word is ‘seat’ as his minutes lagged those of his teammates. This season when three elite U-19 USA teams take on top national teams from Senegal, Canada, Asia, Brazil and Serbia, chances are you’ll find him out on the floor a whole lot more. It’s his turn to shine.

First and foremost, the benenvolent organization of Rotary needs to think long and hard about sponsoring a team next year. Or at least put some ground rules such as "Thou Shall Play in Championship Games." Granted the Seattle Rotary has on its roster Anthony Wroten, a 6'5 guard that will indeed be a special player. They made it into the Sunday Night Championship against another Seattle based team, "The Friends of Hoop" but before tip-off, snuck back to Seattle citing 'tired players and school on Monday.' The Friends of Hoop were declared winner by forfeit. So, in the last 'real' game of the night, fans were treated to a great Third Place game won by Team I-5 Elite over the Chicago based Derrick Rose All-Stars 71-57 in a contest that featured all the fiestiness of a long standing rivalry and a few players that you just know you'll be watching on television for years to come.
