Woods and the SC Crew Ends Coquille Win Streak
If the seeding system for playoff brackets being considered for next year were in effect, this game would probably only come about on Saturday night, not in the middle of the afternoon of the first round.
The top ranked Coquille Red Devils (25-1), coming in on a 24 game winning streak, and with only a 7 point loss to 4A #5 Hidden Valley, encountered the second ranked Santiam Christian Eagles (23-3). A loss to Regis in the PacWest seeding game dropped the regular season champion Eagles into a second seed, and set up an early confrontation with the Sunset champions.
Tayla Woods, the PacWest Player of the Year, hit the first basket for SC, amd it was nearly the middle of the first quarter before freshman Taylor GeDeros got the Red Devils' first free throw.
Four straight points by Bailie Richardson pulled Coquille back into a 7-7 tie, before three straight by Woods.
Kelsey Hill had two offensive rebounds before scoring to give the Red Devils a 10-9 lead that held up over the last minute of the first quarter.
SC opened the second period with a 7-0 run, on a three and a two by Janelle Land, plus a Woods basket, forcing a Coquile timeout a minute and a half into the quarter.
Land extended the run to 9-0 before Christie Andy could stop the SC surge.
The Red Devils answered with a 6-0 run, but then SC ran off seven straight, making it 23-16 with just over a minute left in the first half.
Richardson's jumper at the buzzer kept Coquile within seven of SC at halftime, down 27-20.
Richardson, Woods, and Land all had nine points at the break. Fewer fouls than the first game, and poor free throw shooting accuracy by both teams kept the score down. SC's 40% shooting, hot by the standards early at Willamette, was the difference.
SC opened the second half with a basket, but back to back baskets by Woods opened a nine point, 33-24 lead for SC, and gave Woods 13 points.
Coquille struggled back with four straight points, but Quicey Davis wrapped baskets around another Land basket to extend the Eagles' lead to 12 points, 40-28.
Richardson's two plus one three point play started a 7-0 Red Devil run, but Coquille went scoreless for a minute and a half in the process, and Megan Meador missed a layin with eight seconds left, allowing Woods to score at the buzzer to extend the lead back to seven points, 42-35 heading to the fourth quarter.
SC went patient right away, trying to shorten the game, and ate almost two minutes off the clock.
Meadors' steal lead to a scramble, and a basket by Kelsey Hill, but Woods offset the damage.
SC struggled to find more points, but still carried a six point lead under the four minute mark.
Five Red Devil turnovers have kept Coquille's rally in check, and SC led 44-38 with 3:12 left, when Coach Melissa McClain called timeout to try to setup the stretch run for the Eagles.
SC gets into the bonus, and Woods hit three of four, to extend her total to 20 points, and the Eagles' lead to nine points, 47-38.
Woods answered a Davis basket with two more free throws with just over two minutes left, for a nine point 49-40 lead.
Forced to foul, Coquille became the second highly ranked coastal team to suffer their first loss of the season to a 3A opponent, as Santiam Christian closed out the 57-46 win.
SC had their last six points at the line, and nine of their final eleven. Woods led everyone with 22 points, including six of eight at the line, all but one in the last half of the last quarter.
Richardson led Coquille with 16 points, but was the only Red Devil in double digits, while Davis had a double double, with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Land added another 13 points.
