Raiders Struggle in search for Redemption
Coulter Mastenbroek romped for 225 yards and two touchdowns, as the Scio Loggers stayed unbeaten, trampling the Lost River Raiders for the second time this season.
"We are happy, but not content," Scio Coach Kyle Braa commented. "We want one more win."
After a 465 yard rushing effort, they will be the favorites to get one when they face Kennedy in the 2A finals at Hillsboro stadium. But it's far from a certainty, as the Loggers defeated the Trojans by a close 14-7 margin in Mt. Angel on Oct. 16.
"It's a double edged sword, facing them for the second time," Braa added. "It's good seeing two Tri-River teams in the finals, but we will need to have our best week of the year in practice. We are hoping for another repeat win, but we're not counting on it."
Scio cruised past Lost River 44-7 at home on Sept. 25; the Raiders can erase that memory today. To do so would require slowing down the Loggers' Coulter Mastenbroek. And score some points themselves. Which they got the first opportunity to do.

A 7 yard return sets the Raiders up in excellent position at their 38, and freshman Tanner Stradley instantly completes a pass out to midfield. But he misses a wide open Blake Ireland for what should have been six, and a short punt gives Scio their first shot at their 27.
Mastenbroek cuts inside a block for a first down, one of many sweeps out of the double wing that makes fullback Brandon Rezentes' occaisional blasts up the middle almost a surprise. But an effective one. It's Mastenbroek's 31 yard slant left that caps the drive though, and Trevon Summerlin goes the opposite way for an 8-0 lead just before midway in the opening quarter, as Scio bulldozed their way down the field.
Strandley answers with a deep pass down the right side to Jamie Cobian, and Scio immediately calls time with the Raiders on the Logger 10. Scio stiffens, but Marcos Hernandez drills a 26 yard field goal, cutting it to 8-3.
An illegal block penalty on the kickoff return leave Scio with 92 yards to go. Masterbroek for an 84 yard slant and sprint solves the problem at the 3:04 point for a 14-3 lead.

Scio's Coulter Mastenbroek (3) on one of his sweeps agains Lost River.
Darian Reger intercepts a Strandley overthrow at the Scio 40, and the Loggers are looking to take control, as they cross midfield just as the quarter ends.

One 17 yard sweep was the only big play of the drive, but Scio nonetheless hammers it in on a 5 yard Summerlin sweep. Another Summerlin sweep on the conversion opens the margin to 22-3 at the 9:44 mark.

Lost River consistently put ten in the box, but still couldn't stop Scio's power running game out of their bunched double wing formation.
Reger's keeper gets the Raiders into Logger territory, but a big tackle by Justin Guest eventually leads to a 4th. & 1. A bad snap turns the ball back to Scio at their 35 with 7:10 to go till halftime.
Blitzing Daniel Hernandez slows Scio, who considers a fourth down gamble in their own territory. And Rezentes bulldozes ahead to convert the first down, as we see the ONLY similarity between Scio Coach Kyle Braa's offense and University of Oregon Coach Chip Kelly's. Taking reckless fourth down gambles, and getting away with it!
Josh Rieger pays off the gamble with a 26 yard scoring run, and the rout is on, as Scio surges ahead 30-3 with 3:10 to go.
Lost River stalls on their drive, but so does Scio, and its halftime.
At the half, Scio has 293 yards on 32 carries, 171 by Mastenbroek, while Lost River has thrown for 102 of their 150 total yards.

Scio gets the ball first, at their 15. The Raiders do cover kicks well.
The Loggers happily hammer away at the clock, eating up 6:35 to go 85 yards. Josh Rieger's three yard scoring dive makes it 38-3 with 5:23 left in the period.
Playing for pride now, the Raiders drive into Logger territory. The freshman Stradley is going to turn a lot of heads before his career is done. But another wide open receiver is just barely over thrown, and another incompletion on fourth down hands the ball back to Scio.
The Loggers reach Raider territory, but despite a penalty, Scio is on the Lost River 43 as the quarter ends. 411 rushing yards after three periods for Scio.
4th. qtr.
Scio pushes the lead to 46-3 on a Rezentes plunge and a Summerlin sweep for the conversion with 8:35 left.
The Loggers work on their defensive hitting, and Lost River turns the ball back over with 6:54 left.
Scio circulates the subs in, and thye have to punt for the first time today, with 4:41 left. Mastenbroek pins Lost River at their 4 with a 55 yard punt.
The Raiders drive to their 47, but another slightly overthrown pass forces them to punt. Scio has 1:58 to run off, and they move on to an all Tri-River final against Kennedy, 21-14 winners over Knappa.
"We stuck with the same game plan as before againt Lost River, and will again," Braa observed. "We have a luxury of having a rotation of five guys to carry the ball, and despite some big plays all season, our offense is predicated on grinding it out, and it wouldn't make sense to change that."

Lost River struggled to run the ball against the physical Scio defense most of the afternoon.
"Lost River tightened things down after half time, and that basic approach served us well in response," Braa added.
