Hedrick leads Central to 56-42 victory vs. Marist

Panthers Overcome Fast Marist Start, Dominate Middle Quarters

MONMOUTH — Central High got revenge for last year's playoff loss to Marist, taking a 56-42 victory against the Spartans Friday night at McArthur Field.

 

Central lost to Marist in last year's OSAA Class 4A semifinals.

 

Marist dominated the first quarter by scoring two easy touchdowns. The first touchdown came in the third play of the game at 11:39 when Marist's Mitch Wilson scored from for 37 yards out.

 

With five minutes left in the period, Marist's Jeff Bedbury caught a pass from quarterback Tevin Cheever and ran 62-yards to give Marist a 14-0 lead going into the second quarter.

 

However, the Panthers rallied in a high-scoring second quarter. A 9-yard pass from quarterback Grant Hedrick to Brandon Whiteman put the first points on the board at 10:01 followed only minutes later with a 49-yard pass from Hedrick to Central senior Michael Hamilton the point after kick by Roman Daberkow tied the score at 14.

 

Hedrick had a monster game, throwing for six touchdowns and rushing for a seventh.

Marist swiftly moved the ball up the field using the next five plays to move the ball 61 yards. Marist's Gianni Carter caught a 13-yard scoring pass followed by a PAT by Gabe Schepergerdes to bring the score to 21-14.

 

With 5:45 left on the clock, Hedrick scampered 56 yards for another Central touchdown followed by the two-point conversion by Marcus McArdle to give the Panthers the lead at 22-21.

 

With 2:04 left in the quarter, Central's J.T. Tirado took a pass from Hedrick for 10-yard touchdown. The PAT kick made it 29-21 Panthers.

 

However, with 5.9 seconds left in the half, Bedbury answered with a catch in the end zone followed by a Marist two-point conversion, ending the half in a 29-29 tie.

 

Central capitalized on several Spartan errors, including a big fumble by Bedbury at 9:51 in the third to take control of the game. The Panthers then drove 27 yards in eight plays.

 

A 9-yard touchdown catch by Central junior Jesse Peters followed by a PAT kick by Daberkow brought the score to 36-29 Panthers.

 

Late in the third quarter Hedrick led his team to another touchdown on a 6-yard pass to McArdle with 1:14 left in the period. The PAT kick failed, leaving the score 42-29 Panthers.

 

Marist managed one additional touchdown on a quarterback keeper by Cheever followed by the PAT by Schepergerdes to bring the score 42-36 with 9:33 on the board in the fourth.

 

Senior Brandon Whiteman scored the Panthers' next touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Hedrick for a 49-36 score.

 

Central finished its scoring on a 64 yard run by senior Casey Connor, which capped his game high 176 rushing yards. Marist's Carter managed one final touchdown with 20.5 seconds left on the clock.
