Portland Christian 14-1-2 and Riverdale 13-2-1 both entered the day with hopes of running deep into the state soccer playoffs. Each assembled solid season records while playing good competition throughout the year (including playing each other in a pre-season 1-1 tie).
Riverdale started off attacking Portland Christian's half of the field and controlled most of the first 40 minutes of possession. Both teams had opportunities on goal but neither was able to convert.
A motivated Portland Christian team asserted themselves in the second half, changing the momentum in their favor. The Royal attack was impressive, but could not penetrate Ryan Mick (GK) and the Riverdale Defense. The score ended 0-0 at the 80 minute mark. "We made a couple of adjustments at half, but mainly it was the kids recognizing that they needed to battle harder. At half time we put an added emphasis on winning 50-50 balls," PC coach Aaron Lewis stated.
The first goal of the game was scored by Riverdale in the first overtime when Oliver Field broke free down the left side line. He crossed a ball across the mouth of the goal and it was put away by Jake Elder with 17 minutes left in the 20 minute overtime period. Portland Christian pushed forward and finally broke through with a goal from Spencer Oien assisted by Gonzalo Noriega 4 minutes later. The overtime sessions ended with a 1-1 stalemate.
In the shootout, PC GK Keegan Rogers was heroic. Keegan saved 3 of the 5 Riverdale shots while Caleb Nyone, AJ Asatcio Patten, and Dave Smouse buried shots for the Royal victory. |
