Many followers of Oregon High School football have been following Coach Dewey Sullivan's battle with a tumor, and the impact on his community.
For those that have missed the highlights, Coach Sullivan, who has led the Pirates for over 40 years (and led them to wins over a lot of us at some point in time; the latest redistricting isn't the first), had surgery last week.
A benign tumor behind his right eye required a considerable surgical effort, and some follow up work.
The McMinnville News-Register has an excellent article you can read here.
Dayton is pressing on, with assistant Coach Rob Umbenhower leading the Pirates. Coincidentally, the Pirates' first 2 games with their head coach on IR were last Friday against 3A's #1 Santiam Christian, and this week at 4A's #5 Siuslaw Vikings. Those are battles for anyone from any level at full strength.
Its hard not to pull for the Pirate community, and Coach Sullivan, even if you are an opponent on the field. Its people like these that help make our favorite sport worthy of the favorite status.
