Last week & next

Week 1 had some great games, and a few outcomes that can’t go unnoticed.

Panda

Best (as in close) games have to include:

St. Paul over Dufur 28-26 in 3 OT at the Classic in Dufur. 8-man is always a wild game, but this wasn’t a shoot-out, and had to have been a blood pressure booster.

Sherwood over Cottage Grove 14-13 in 2 OT, after 0-0 at the end of regulation. This could have gone on even longer; my question is why did CG risk losing AFTER their kicker proved he could keep them alive? With their schedule, the Lions could be one of the top 10 teams in 4A, yet start 0-5, have a losing record, and miss the playoffs.

North Salem 13 Ashland 7 in OT. Big win for the Vikings. When building up a program, sometimes its more important how you win than whether you win.

Barlow 27 Oregon City 21. This is one that perhaps wasn’t supposed to be so close. Especially given their comparative schedules, the jury will be out on these teams for a while.

Dayton 21 Regis 20. Dewey has gotten a lot of these close ones, but 2!! TD PASSES?!! That makes this one of Dayton’s best passing years already.

There were also some numbers that can’t be ignored.

Jesuit 49 Mt. View (WA) 0. That CAN’T be encouraging for anyone else in 6A.

Camas Valley 80 Jewell 34. Yes, its 8 man, and yes, it is Jewell, but that is still a LOT of points.

This week, there are again some games anyone without a game to attend should consider.

Central Catholic Rams @ Jesuit Crusaders. The annual Holy War. This rivalry is just different than any other in the state.

South Salem Saxons @ Roseburg Indians. Time to find out if the Central Valley is ready for travel & the big time.

Southridge Skyhawks @ Lake Oswego Lakers. This might be the best of the matchups of the big time programs this week. And an opportunity to park your  Toyota between a BMW & a Lexus.

Centennial Eagles vs. O’Dea (WA) in Husky stadium in Seattle Saturday. With Marshfield & Marist, the Eagles are putting Oregon High School football on a big stage in the Gridiron classic. How they do reflects on all of us, like it or not. Like them or hate them week to week, this week we all better root for these 3.

West Albany Bulldogs @ Pendleton Bucaroos. Teams with a possible rematch in their plans.

Crater @ Sherwood. Teams hoping for a possible rematch. Lots of folks are interested in seeing if either really are good bets for postseason runs.

Bend Lava Bears @ Redmond Panthers. One of the oldest rivalries is kept alive after redistricting.

Portland Christian Royals @ Rainier Columbians. A 2A team getting some attention in the polls visiting a team that dropped down/stayed behind. Prior to redistricting, this matchup wouldn’t have crossed anyone’s mind. Now, in the newly redistricted world, this is a classic field test of the theory behind the plan.
