Rams settle for seconds

Stayton – The Regis Rams teams reached the finals on both the boys and girls sides of their Holiday tournament, but both championships went out of town.

Dayton came from behind to defeat Regis 52-49 for the boys’ title, and La Pine, the fourth ranked team in the 4A class, defeated the lady Rams 56-40 for the girls’ championship. It was only the second time since the 1994 inception of the tournament that neither Regis team claimed a title.

Regis reached the boys’ title game with a 66-40 win over the Southridge, British Columbia, Storm. The girls advanced with a 56-32 win over the Dayton Pirates.

Rams roll in first round

Derek Piete poured in 26 points against Southridge, as the Rams raced to an 18-7 first quarter lead, and opened the margin to 23 points at half time, taking a 38-15 lead at the break. No other Rams were in double figures, but with a huge lead, Regis played their entire roster, and still extended their lead slightly over the Storm in each remaining quarter.

Dayton downed La Pine 76-42 to earn a shot at the Rams in the boys’ title game.

Kayla Dolby and Whitney Koehnke both scored 13 points for the Ram girls against Dayton, as Regis dominated the Pirates throughout the game. Defense was key, as Dayton only scored in double digits in the second quarter, and was still left well behind, as Regis opened an 11-4 opening period advantage up to a 32-17 half time lead.

La Pine’s gilrs used a 20-9 fourth quarter to roll to a 50-33 win over Western Mennonite, a team that had already defeated Regis 35-33, in the other opening day game. The Hawks had three players in double figures, lead by Kassi Conditt.

Second day brings stiffer challenges

Dayton controlled much of the game against the Regis boys, but still trailed 36-32 after three quarters. The Pirates had opened up an 11-8 first period lead, but the Rams dominated the second quarter 16-8, to lead 24-19 at half time.

However, Dayton rallied to outscore Regis 20-13 down the stretch to claim the championship. Travis Bernards, one of three Pirates in double figures, led all scorers with 16 points. Darrel Risen led Regis with 15, while Piete and Joe Jaeger were both held to nine points by the Pirate defense.

Additionally, Dayton drilled five three pointers, while Regis only connected on two.

Southridge bounced back to claim third place with a 61-31 win over La Pine.

Hawks blitz Ram girls

The Hawks, whose only loss in ten games coming in was to 5A Bend, roared out of the dressing room to a 13–2 first quarter lead over the 3a ninth ranked Rams. Regis battled back, actually winning the second quarter 13-11, but the Hawks came out of half time flying again. The 19 third period points La Pine piled up was significant, but more critical was Regis’ inability to score, with only four points against the aggressive Hawk defense.

With a 24 point, 43-19 lead, La Pine let up the pressure, but still coasted to the win.

Emily Buchheit led Regis with 11 points, and Koehnke was held to nine by the Hawks. Conditt, easily the player of the tournament, led La Pine with 24 points, and had 39 total.

Western Mennonite defeated Dayton 54-32 for third place.
