Santiam Christian Reclaims 3A Cup

Five of six winners of the Oregonian Cup from last year repeated as winners, and Santiam Christian, who had won a cup every year since its inception in the 1999-2000 year, until Burns dropped the Eagles to second last year, turned the tables on the Hilanders, reclaiming the 3A cup, and dropping Burns to second.

The win increased the total number of cups for the Adair Village school to 7, highest in the state. The Jesuit Crusaders claimed a fourth consecutive Oregonian Cup, and their fifth overall, outdistancing Tigard. The Tigers had their best ever finish in second, for the 6A cup.

The Crescent Valley Raiders claimed their second consecutive 5A cup, finishing ahead of the Hermiston Bulldogs, another school with their best ever finish in second, in the closest finish of any class. CV claimed the cup by 34 points, 4667-4633. Marist outdistanced the Sisters Outlaws to claim the 4A cup, the fifth consecutive cup for the Spartans. The Spartans' total of 4810 points was the highest total in any class.

St. Mary’s Crusaders claimed the 2A cup over Union, and the Triad Timber Wolves of Klamath Falls claimed their third consecutive 1A cup.

Now known as The Oregonian Cup, the award began in 1999, as a way to recognize overall excellence by schools in academics, activities and athletics. The Oregonian newspaper became the award’s title sponsor in 2002.

The award honors a school's students, teachers, coaches and the entire school community. Schools earn points based on their participation and finish in all OSAA State Championships, and also for Top 10 finishes in the OSAA Academic All-State Program, sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon.

The sportsmanship component, where schools are awarded points each season for having no ejections, is included as well. The points are updated and released at the end of Fall and Winter seasons, and then totaled at the end of the year. The school earning the highest points in each classification receives a commemorative trophy from The Oregonian and the OSAA.

Complete current results and historic results are available on the OSAA website.

Congratulations to all who achieved blended excellence across a variety of academic and athletic ventures.
