The Spring Activities season is now complete, and the end of the year brings the awarding of the Oregonian Cup in each of the 6 classes, to the schools whose overall programs proved strongest.

The Cup award began with the 1999-2000 school year, and the Oregonian became the sponsor of the award in 2002. Schools earn points equally for participation in, and their finish, in each OSAA State Championship, both athletics and activities, and also for top 10 finishes in the Dairy Farmers of Oregon OSAA Academic All-State Program. Sportsmanship plays a part as well, with points earned for each season with no ejections. The program truly makes team-mates of all the members of all the athletic and activity programs.

With the expansion to 6 classes, some first time winners emerged, while some perennial powers continued to prevail.

Jesuit, winners of the last 2 4A Cups, and 3 overall, claimed the first 6A Cup over North Medford. The Crusaders captured 5 state championships (Girls' Cross Country, Football, Boys' Swimming, Boys' Golf & Girls' Tennis), and added 5 seconds as well (Boys' Cross Country, Boys' Soccer, Girls' Basketball, Girls' Golf, and Girls' Cross Track & Field). The Metro League power also had 9 programs finish in the top six in the Academic All-Star programs.

Crescent Valley claimed the first 5A Cup, their second overall (they shared the 00-01 4A Cup with Klamath) over Churchill. The Corvallis school won state titles in boys swimming, girls swimming and boys golf this year to along with 2nd. place finishes in girls soccer and girls tennis, and a 3rd. place finish in band. For the year, twelve programs from Crescent Valley finished in the top six in the Academic All-State program.

Marist, winner of the last 3 3A cups, and 4 total, claimed the closest race, edging North Bend by 32 points. The Spartans from Eugene pulled out the win with their spring championship in Boys' Track & Field and their Boys' Golf team's second place finish. These, coupled with earlier seconds in Girls' Soccer & Dance & Drill, as well as having 15 programs finish in the top ten in academics, and 0 ejections on the year, pulled out the Cup for Marist, 3,667 to 3,635 for the Brown Bulldogs.

The big news of the cup is that Santiam Christian, who had won all 7 of the 2A Cups, did NOT win the 3A Cup in their first year after redistricting. The Eagles still managed to come in second, but the Burns Hilanders won their first ever Oregonian Cup. State titles in Volleyball, Wrestling, Girls' Track & Field, and Baseball, and 15 programs in the top 10 academically propelled the Hilanders. Notably, Burns also claimed 2 academic championships, as the Girls' Basketball team that claimed a third place were the top Girls' Basketball academic team (3.91), and their Boys' Golf team (3.85) also claimed an academic championship.

St. Mary's of Medford claimed their first 2A Oregonian Cup. The Crusaders' Boys Soccer Team finished second, competing with 3A teams, and their Girls' Golf team, competing against teams all the way up to 4A, also claimed a second. 15 top ten academic teams also helped push them ahead of another Medford area private school, Cascade Christian, who finished second in 2A.

The Triad Timberwolves of Klamath Falls claimed their second consecutive Oregonian Cup in the 1A class. 9 Timberwolf programs finished in the top 6 in the Academic All-State program. The Timberwolves also earned 6th. place in both Choir and Girls' basketball, and a 5th. place in Girls' track & field at state.

Complete standings are available at the OSAA website.
