Gladiators face Eagles in Playoff Qualifier

Gladstone and Estacada rolled on, while Stayton stunned La Salle with takeaways, and North Marion stumbled down south.

The Gladiators' Taylor Taft completed every pass he attempted in the second quarter, and completed eight straight, on his way to a four touchdown performance, and a 41-6 win in Gladstone's Homecoming. Stayton won the turnover margin against La Salle 6-0, and as a result, the game, 13-7.

The "E"s posted shutouts, as Estacada rolled Molalla 44-0, and Elmira collared North Marion 14-0.

This week, the Falcons visit the Eagles, in a game vital to both birds' playoff prospects, while Gladstone and Estacada look to stay on pace at the top.

Gladstone, Stayton Move to the Top

Gladstone got a close, 13-7 win over North Marion, and Estacada and Stayton set up for a showdown, with wins over Cascade and Molalla. The Rangers pulled away in the second half, defeating the Cougars 44-18, behind three rushing performances that were for well over 100 yards apiece. The Eagles dominated the Indians 33-14, using a 50 carry rushing effort, and a defense that limited Molalla to about half as many plays as Stayton ran.

La Salle outdistanced Scappoose 38-23, which leaves the Indians 2-2 in the Capital Conference. The Falcons went to 2-0 against Coawpa playoff contenders this pre-season. I was 4-0, and 21-7 on the season.

With Rivalry Games Completed, its Back to Business as Usual

Gladstone made a statement with their 24-7 win over La Salle, and Stayton got their first league win in two years, a 34-21 win at Cascade. The win extended the Eagles' winning streak to three games, a three year high. And North Marion took care of business against their neighbors from Molalla, as none of the rivalry games were really that close. Solid margins did nothing to diminish the sweetness of any of the wins, though.

Estacada's 35-13 loss to Astoria dropped the conference to 12-9 for the year. I was 3-1, 17-7, on the season.

Conference Schedule Kicks Off for all but Estacada

The Conference won five of seven games for the second week in a row, improving to 12-8 on the season. La Salle and Gladstone won big games on the road, and Stayton has their first win streak in 2 years. I was 5-2, due to picking a Husky win and a Husky loss, but getting the Huskies mixed up, and am 14-6 on the season.

Usually, rivalry week in football falls at or near the end of the season. But for some reason, the Capital Conference Athletic Directors decided on a schedule that puts all the major regional rivalry games on the first weekend. And in the Capital, these rivalries have a long history behind them. Expect this week to be the hardest hitting week of the season.

Overtime Games and Impressive Performances Highlighted Last Week

The Conference won five of seven games, improving to 7-6 on the season, behind strong wins by last year’s top two teams, La Salle and Gladstone. Stayton gained their first win of the season, and a pair of games went to overtime. I was 4-3, 9-4, on the season.

After a Rough Opening Week, the Schedule Stays Stiff

Two of the best teams in the state, Central and Gladstone, play games on Capital Conference turf, and an odd quirk of scheduling sees two defending league champions square off after everyone else, and on Metro League real estate to boot!

Five of the seven teams have home games this week, but the other two, Estacada and Stayton, are on the road for the second straight week. I went 5-1, while the Conference went 2-4, and 1-3 against the Cowapa Conference.

Four Faceoffs Against Cowapa Competitors Highlight Opening Week

Both the Capital and Cowapa conferences are looking for better years, as the only team to advance as far as the quarterfinals from either circuit was Yamhill-Carlton, and they were eliminated by the largest margin recorded in any 4A playoff game when they faced eventual state champion Marist.

Santiam Christian Reclaims 3A Cup

Five of six winners of the Oregonian Cup from last year repeated as winners, and Santiam Christian, who had won a cup every year since its inception in the 1999-2000 year, until Burns dropped the Eagles to second last year, turned the tables on the Hilanders, reclaiming the 3A cup, and dropping Burns to second.
