  • Parking will never be pretty around here, or Hayward Field. The new arena can’t open too soon, or have too much parking.

  • Perhaps after the new arena opens, they can replace Mac Court with a parking lot. It would benefit the Softball stadium and Hayward Field.

  • The best thing about covering games at any level in Eugene are the Jerry Allen jokes.

Day 4

* With only 1 overpriced concession stand, and 1 burrito bar, concessions at Gill leave several things to be desired. Including being open for breakfast.

* Too bad the Lion band never made it, and the Tiger band couldn’t bother to come out for morning games.

* Lets review. The hands are not part of the ball. Also, it should be ok to go over the back, or over the top, when you actually go OVER the back and top, and don’t touch the player. In a tournament where what would be assault and battery in the hall isn’t a foul, not touching anyone sometimes has been. ???

Willamette Notes

Day 4

* Showtime Saturday night was indeed showtime. And unanimous All-Tournament selections Molly Schwegler and Derek Piete lived (and lived up to) the dream. Both turned in dominating performances that delivered championships. The scary thing for the rest of the 3A field is both will be back. Which means a repeat isn't a dream, its a realistic goal for both of the "R" programs.

* Showtime Saturday night was also sellout Saturday night. While Willamette was spacious enough for most sessions with room to spare, problems with seating matched the problems with weekday parking. And will someone PLEASE explain to some zealots that there are people who are NOT directly associated with either team that watch these games. A general admission ticket is good for any and all seats in the house, and for both games in the session.

Scan the OregonPrepSports.net database and you find that everyone reads the polls. Read the forums, and a lot of people will say they don’t mean anything, and they don’t care about them, yadda, yadda, yadda. But sports fans always check out the “Top 10”. And usually take exception to it, unless, of course, their team is ranked #1.

In that vein, I looked back at the year that 2007 was in Oregon High School Sports, and tried to identify the top stories we followed in the year that passed. Here’s my picks from a full year of fun following fantastic young men and women.

Cascade blew by Stayton in the wind in the “brawl” 41-6. La Salle wrapped up their league season with a perfect conference record, and a 24-7 win against North Marion. Gladstone lost at Molalla 36-15, the third straight loss for the Gladiators. Despite that, Gladstone is still going to the playoffs. Estacada took the week off to prepare for a win at all costs contest for both teams at Cascade.
