Gladstone and LaSalle moved to the head of the Conference, as the Gladiators defeated Cascade 22-18 in a battle of ranked teams, while the Falcons ruined Stayton’s homecoming 41-0.

Estacada confirmed they are a playoff contender as well, with their 17-14 win at North Marion.

It’s a short week for preparation, due to the Statewide Teachers’ In-service on Friday. The Capital Conference, like many other conferences, but not all, move their games up in light of the fact that most students have Friday off, and many coaches and administrators will be out of area of Friday.

The Capital has four teams in the top 10, and it means 2 games matching top 10 teams are on tap this week.

Cascade’s dominating win over Pleasant Hill advanced the Conference’s mark to 16-5 against other leagues this season. I was 4-0, and 18-6 on the year.

Cascade cruised to a 55-6 win over Pleasant Hill, and held their second consecutive opponent to negative rushing yardage. North Marion played some defense too, which they needed in beating Stayton 13-2. Gladstone made a statement offensively, but also defensively as well, for the third week in a row, in beating Estacada 28-0. LaSalle avenged last year’s league championship deciding loss to Molalla, and did so soundly, in their 34-6 win over the Indians.

The big news wasn’t necessarily that the Falcons upset the Fish in the “Sporty” game of the week, but the 32-7 margin was big news. LaSalle demonstrated that they have Astoria’s number, especially defensively. Cowapa and other upcoming 4A opponents of the Fish might want to get a copy of the game videos from this one and last year’s playoff win.

The Conference went 6-1, including 3-1 against the Cowapa, as well as sweeping 3 from the Valco. That makes the Conference 10-3 on the season. I was 5-2, and 10-3 on the year as well.

LaMonica Leads Cougars past Warriors

Sophomore QB Nick LaMonica is adjusting to the job of grid iron gunslinger. LaMonica, whose’s job is to replace 3 year starter Tommy Coleman, demonstrated the resiliency usually associated with more experienced players. When the aggressive Philomath defense forced 3 consecutive incompletions, LaMonica responded with a 34 yard swing pass to Casey Johnson for a touchdown.

The Conference got off to a 4-2 start, including a 2-2 split with the Cowapa Conference. I was 5-1, including correctly predicting a 1 point margin in the Philomath-Stayton game, one of only 4 1 point games on opening weekend, and the only one involving 4A teams. Unfortunately, I had the wrong team winning. The boss was happy, though, so all is good.

This week, there are again 4 games between the Capital Conference and the Cowapa, and 3 games against Valco League teams.
