CCCougarfan BlogBig Games Rock the House (And the Standings)Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Tuesday, 13 February 2007 16:35 Hits: 578 Tuesday night was the antidote for the February Blahs, as there were some big games to fill the gyms.
Biggest news of the night is the upset of the 6A #1 South Medford Panthers by the #8 Sheldon Irish, 65-61. Kyle Singler had a chance to tie it in the last minute, but traveling was the call. Lake Oswego could take over the top spot.
Biggest 4A game was another upset, as #2 Hidden Valley knocked off their league rivals, the #1 Henley Hornets, 45-35.
In the 6A Central Valley girls action, McKay took a 1/2 game lead with a 55-48 win over West Salem.
And in the barn burners in the 4A Capital Conference, Stayton got away from Cascade with 2 big wins, as the #2 Eagle girls defeated the #3 Cougars 43-32, and the #6 Eagle boys pulled into a tie with the #5 Cougars with a 62-60 win in overtime.
Another top 10Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Wednesday, 31 January 2007 00:11 Hits: 687 Upset Tuesday provided unexpected losses for 9 ranked teams (Several other ranked teams lost too, but to teams ranked above them), including 2 #1s (a pretty unusual happening this late in the season), and produced a lot of proof of why they roll the ball out on the floor, instead of just posting the poll results.
6A Girls #1 Southridge & 3A Boys #1 Regis both went down, but that's just part of the Oregonprepsports.net "What were the pollsters thinking?" top 10.
Cougars, Eagles split games between ranked teams.Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:17 Hits: 492 Cascade's #10 boys upset the #3 Eagles 58-45 to take over sole possession of first place in the Capital Conference.
But Stayton's #2 girls shut down the #7 Cougars 38-29, setting up a battle Friday with #1 Gladstone for first place in the state, as well as in the Conference.
A January like no other (so far).Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Sunday, 14 January 2007 11:51 Hits: 613 The Seahawks are sunk, and the Patriots are still playing football. At first glance, it might look just like any other January. But not in Oregon High School sports.
Stayton Holiday Classic, Boys Final DayWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:26 Hits: 1058 Black Hills 48 North Bend 39 North Bend & Black Hills close out the week, a contrast in styles in the championship game. The Bulldogs use outside shooting & a lot of movement. The Wolves use a lot of muscle and hustle. Stayton Holiday Classic, Girls Final DayWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:16 Hits: 898 Stayton 35 Scappoose 29 The Championship is a rematch between #2 Scappoose & #3 Stayton. The winner could even move past #1 Gladstone, who lost in California, with an impressive performance. Stayton Holiday Classic, Semi Finals DayWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Friday, 29 December 2006 01:19 Hits: 1092 The Stayton Eagle & Scappoose Indian girls will have a rematch of the game won by 'Poose 33-31 in Stayton earlier in the year. Their boys teams will also rematch ('Poose won that one in 'Poose, 57-50), but not in the way they wanted, as it will be for third place, not the title.
That will be the decided when the North Bend Bulldogs, who demolished 'Poose 60-39, and the Black Hills (WA) Wolves, who prevailed in a football game on hardwood, 42-38 winners over the Eagles.
Stayton Holiday Classic Tournament PreviewWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Tuesday, 26 December 2006 05:30 Hits: 659 When the teams were announced, the tournament looked like possibly the best 4A tournament of the year, the Championship tournament in Corvallis included. After all, the Boys' side had 4 tournament teams from last year and 2 more that were in the state playoffs, as well as an intriguing visitor from Washington. The Girls' side also had 4 tournament teams, and all 8 played in the postseason last year. And half the top 10 at the start of the season. All packed into 24 games in 3 days.
Then a few bumps in the road were encountered.
Capital Week 13Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Monday, 20 November 2006 10:10 Hits: 551 Also known this week as the "Upper Bracket Conference", the Capital Conference is one of only 2 4A conferences (with the GOL) with 2 teams left in the hunt.
The Gladiators and Falcons went on the road and pulled off come from behind, big upset wins. Both rematches of the week turned out quite different than the first time around. And the Indians were sent to the Happy Hunting grounds. And now, the going gets even tougher.
(Updated with Falcon & Gladiator game stats., & details on History in the making.)
Capital Week 12Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Monday, 13 November 2006 11:50 Hits: 685 The Gladstone Gladiators pulled out a 30-27 win over the Brookings-Harbor Bruins in one of the best games of the week. It was the first trip to the playoffs in a decade for the Gladiators, and they didn't disappoint anyone but the Bruins, snatching victory from defeat by forcing a fumble by the Bruins' All-Everything RB Anthony Longo on the 2 point conversion attempt to win the game, which Darrell Fields not only secured, but took 99 yds. to put the 2 pts. on the Happy Rock total instead.
This week, the top 2 teams have rematches from the regular season, and the Gladiators go bear hunting.
