Maybe Sherwood's Coach Greg Lawrence can console Glencoe's Tim Duvall that 'this is just what the doctor ordered in order to take the next step to becoming a better team.' Its a dangerous game when you start looking at common opponents and using that as a measuring stick. Maybe last week Sherwood deduced they'd beaten West Albany and ergo should defeat Hillsboro. Maybe Glencoe deduced Hilhi throttled Sherwood and they were beaten on a fluke play ergo they should defeat Sherwood. Sometimes its hard to figure out whats going to happen on any given Friday Night and just like nobody saw the 48-14 beat down the Bowmen were given, nobody saw this lopside 62-6 Sherwood win coming either. In what is shaping out as a playoff that will be full of intrigue and mystery, the third ranked Sherwood Bowmen came out firing on all cylinders and getting back to their basics in demolishing the fifth ranked Glencoe Crimson Tide to grab the steering wheel of the #2 NWOC Playoff Seed.
It was "If you could walk a mile in my shoes night" and Sherwood gave Glencoe the shoes (minus the pink socks of last week) they'd worn the previous week and Glencoe one upped them. So out of synch and totally dominated at the line of scrimmage was Glencoe on this night that by halftime, they had given up 397 rushing yards to the Bowmen and trailed 48-6. Sherwood went to the lockeroom with 20 first downs to just two for the Tide. Glencoe gained 92 first half yards and of that 79 yards came on a Tanner Apeland to Derrick Elford score in the second quarter. Elford would later catch another 49 yard pass and account for a majority of the Tide yards on this night.
Sherwoods first half was a role reversal from the previous week plain and simple. Last week, fullback Michael Balfour hardly touched the ball and had 4 carries for 7 yards in the first half. By halftime this Friday, Balfour had nine carries for 206 yards and three touchdowns (runs of 5, 33 and 75 yards). Steven Long had eight carries for 118 yards and two touchdowns (44 and 12 yards) and Trent Duppenthaler would tack on 60 yards and a score by the half. Duppenthaler would also go over the 100 yard marker with 115 yards on 12 carries. Long would finish with 157 yards on nine carries for the night as the second half moved quickly due to the running clock. Both teams spent the second half letting their JV and backups get plenty of playing time. By the end, Sherwood had amassed over 590 yards of total offense.
Tanner Apeland is one of the best quartebacks in the NWOC and he must have salivated at the amount of time Dominique Mims had last week as Mim's baked cookies and filmed informercials while sitting in the pocket looking for downfield receivers. Apeland would have no such luck as Sherwood wasn't just putting heat on Apeland, they were blasting him with flamethrowers most the night as six first half sacks would attest. His backfield running mate Kyle Cameron is usually reliable, smart and good for 100 yards rushing against even the toughest of opponents. He had eight carries for 29 yards of which 18 of those came late in the second half when Sherwood's JV's had taken the field.
As gaudy as the stats for Sherwood's running backs looked, the MVP of the game was the O-Line and D-Line who got back into full swing after having the "Facial LaFleur'ed" performed on them by the Hilhi lines. Sherwood will go as deep into the playoffs as their line will let them. They looked like a top ranked team again. Or at least deserving mention of being near the top. For Glencoe, they can take this as a postive lesson and prepare the games down the road. It seemed to work well for Sherwood.
