Showdown at Noon Matches Anything Marshall Dillon Ever Faced! 1 yard. 1 point. 1 last play. Two #1s that warrant the number they wear. 1 for the ages. The Outlaws came from behind, held off an Ontario gamble, worthy of a Dodge City Saloon poker game, and after over 3 hours, still had to, of all things, ask Cory McCaffrey to loose yards! Which he did, disposing of the last 5.8 seconds (No body can stop Cory that fast), and the clock read :00. And Sisters is headed for Reser Stadium. McCaffrey outgained Loren Stewart 227-196 despite having to give 3 of them back, and advanced his State Record total to 8,342. Afterwards, a winded Coach Bob MaCauley thanked his team for "A GREAT effort down here to stop that conversion! There was LOTS of courage from both teams!" MaCauley also noted "I'm glad they don't have 1 more minute in a quarter.", after a second straight down to the wire wild finish. McCaffrey, the Qwest Player of the Game, along with Stewart, said "It could have gone either way. But I think my line did a good job. Ontario has a huge line, but we got them a little tired out in the second half. Sometimes there was just no where to go. But I worked with what I had, and eventually, the line was able to open some holes." (Updated with photos.)
Ontario Tigers (12-0) vs. #1 Sisters Outlaws (12-0) The Tigers’ Loren Stewart had 188 rushing yards, and four touchdowns, on 26 carries, as Ontario ran 55 plays, and put up 55 points against Sutherlin, despite having only two plays for over 20 yards. A 3-0 turnover margin in favor of the Tigers was much of what made the Bulldogs Blue too. Ontario’s ability to play downhill on Sutherlin turned the game from a 13-7 Tiger advantage part way into the second quarter into an Ontario overwhelming. The Tiger defense did their part as well, allowing only 124 yards of offense to the Bluedogs, who had their only score on a 95 yard Caleb Trowbridge kickoff return. O averages giving up only 10 points per game, despite being way ahead in many games, where reserves trading points for minutes is a sound game plan. That’s a touchdown per game better than the Outlaws. The Outlaws continued to demonstrate the most explosive offense in 4A, maintaining an average of over 53 points per game against the usually stout Brown Bulldog defense. The state’s leading career rusher, Outlaw Cory McCaffrey, passed the 8,000 yard career mark, and scored twice on runs of over 60 yards. Sisters Quarterback Jarred Hasskamp also had three touchdown throws of over 30 yards, as the Outlaws scored early, often, and from everywhere. However, North Bend did too, and on both offense and defense. Cold weather could have caused some of the turnovers, but Hasskamp’s third thrown interception of the season, McCaffrey’s fumble, and a recovered kickoff by the Brown Bulldogs are examples of what Sisters can’t afford to keep allowing, or another disappointing end to the season could be coming. Shawn Mitchell had 33 & 64 yard scoring runs against the Outlaw defense that had uncharacteristic trouble helping their offense. The officials come from the east side too, the Northeast Oregon Assn. It begins at midfield at Cottage Grove, instead of main street in Dodge City, but is just as intense. The predicted traffic trouble, and anticipated snowy weather, didn’t happen, as it’s partly clear. It was completely calm, but the wind is coming up out of the south/east. And warm enough at the Grove to be good for football. Sisters has won the toss, and will receive. Ontario will defend the north goalline, and go into a mild crosswind. The Sisters band has played the National Anthem; now it show time! 1st. qtr. The turf tackles Cory McCaffrey on the kickoff return at the 15. A left to right crossing route from Jarred Hasskamp to Tanner Hodges on the first play is good for 45 yards. A deep left fly route to Nate Jackson is just too long, and the Tigers stop the Outlaws on the first series.
The pass sails over everyone. The Tigers go right at the Outlaws with the rush, effectively, but the first pass play produces a sack. Back to the run, and a facemask penalty after the play puts O on the 29. But another sack forces a punt. It's a fake! Tad Anzaluda takes it up the middle, but is short. Service break both ways, and no scoring 6 minutes into the game! After 12 plays, and over 5 minutes, its' 4th. & goal at the 2, and @ 1:45 Sisters calls time. It has been a pound it out drive, but the 13th. play is an incompletion out of an empty backfield, and it bounced of Jackson's arm, and O takes over at their 2. BIG stop!
Sisters QB Jarred Hasskamp (14) throws for Nate Jackson (3)…
But the pass deflects off Jackson’s arm! But a fumble in the endzone results in Bryson Sap taking a safety! Sisters 2-0 with 58.2 left! Hasskamp comes out firing. O is doing a good job of getting the second man to the point of attack defensively.
Ontario’s Chad Allen (15) trips up Tanner Hodges (24), as Jake Turner (16) pursues. 2nd. qtr. A 16 yard pass away from the bunch formation to Hodges sets up a 6 yard slant post to a wide open Jackson for the touchdown to go up 9-0 @ 11:33.
Nate Jackson (3) hauls in the touchdown catch for Sisters. Sisters is showing O a lot besides their running game. Loren Stewart shows everyone something, taking the kickoff on the left hash, cuts to the right sideline, and goes 83 yards to make it 9-7. Now the firefight is starting.
Loren Stewart (2) clears the last Sisters defender with an 83 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. O is blitzing big time, and get burned! Carrol Gryder down the right sideline for a 70 yard touchdown. Hodges' kick makes it Sisters 16-7 @ 9:19.
Carroll Gryder (27) headed for a Sisters Touchdown. Stewart starts the drive with a hard running 20 yarder, but its outside. O's big size advantage on the line isn't working inside, but when they flow outside, its money. 34 yards on the left side for a Stewart touchdown in fact. The kick is wide, but O pulls within 16-13 @ 8:05.
Loren Stewart (1) cuts left… And Scores for Ontario. The wind carries the kickoff well thru the endzone. And Sisters goes 3 & punt. Jackson booms a 43 yard punt against the wind. Jake Turner on the left-right end around for 13 works so well O does it again for 9. Jake Turner (16) on an end sweep for Ontario. Then its back to the left by Stewart for 24 to the 5. Sap's keeper cutting thru behind the right tackle caps a 7 play drive, and an offside penalty on the conversion sets up a 2 point try, which Turner converts for a 21-16 O lead with 4:13 left.
Bryson Sap (5) Scores for Ontario. Jackson threads thru traffic for 2 19 yard catches, and then McCaffrey finds the right sideline for 40 to the 7.
Cory McCaffrey (1) gains 40 yards for Sisters. He was ruled out short of the score.
But McCaffrey (1) scored anyway.Another O offsides makes it an easy 3 yard spin for McCaffrey. Jackson is stopped on a confusing 2 point try, but Sisters still has a 22-21 lead with 2:01 until the half. Levi Goins and Marcus Gamboni finally figure out the Stewart sweep, but Sap reverses to midfield. Sap overthrows an open Bret Martin, then finds him for 5, and O takes time with 9.9 to go.
Bryson Sap (5) scrambles to midfield.
The pass for Ontario’s Bret Martin (11) is overthrown as Shawn Mauer (26) closes in for Sisters.A completion to Turner is good to the 32, and he gets out of bounds with 2.8 seconds left. The teams trade timeouts before a 50 yard FG attempt. Jacob Haueter's kick from the right hash, with a cross-tail wind is wide left! He over-compensated for the wind, trying to play the wind. Sisters still up 22-21 at the half! # # # # # # Both teams are looking to mix things up, and it's almost netted out. A safety and a missed conversion are the difference, but the game has shown explosive plays as well as power plays, offense and defense, and ups and downs in the kicking game. A show befitting the two top teams. Will either team pull anything else new out of the bag, or will one go back to basics? Time for the coaches to earn them big bucks! # # # # # # 3rd. qtr. The rain has started, and the wind is flag-out, as O gets the ball, with the wind in their face. O goes backwards twice, but gets a pass interference call behind an incompletion. And its 30 yards, when the Outlaw bench gets an unsportsmanlike penalty too. Ball on the Outlaw 44. But the Outlaw stops them again. O shows punt, and Sisters drops no one. They know its a fake, and force the turn over on downs. And McCaffrey answers with 8 & 32 yard sweeps right & left. Michael Ortiz sacks Hasskamp to force 4th. down, and Anzaluda defends the deep right corner pass for Hodges.
Ontario’s Michael Ortiz (55) sacks Jarred Hasskamp (14). Ontario has held, and answers with a 36 yard left seam completion to Turner. Sap scrambles down the right sideline for a 38 yard touchdown, and then rolls to the left corner out of kick formation for 2 more, and a 29-22 Tiger lead @ 5:47.
Bryson Sap (5) scores from 38 yards out for Ontario. The rain has stopped, but not the wind. Turner plays defense too, breaking up Hasskamp's pass. The answer? McCaffrey sweep for 24. And the rain comes back. A measurement comes up short, even though the chains don't span 10 yards on the marks on the field! No matter, completion to McCaffrey for enough to move the sticks. McCaffrey has hops, stepping over a diving tackle, but a false start forces Hasskamp to scramble to get a first at the 16.
Cory McCaffrey (1) Hops Jake Turner (16) before Chad Allen (15) can make the stop.
Jarred Hasskamp (14) gets Sisters close to the Ontario Goal Line. McCaffrey dives for 9, and Turner deflects another pass. Hasskamp gets the first down, but Sisters (finally) gets called for an illegal sub, breaking the huddle with 12. The O fans have been screaming, and finally get the call. Jackson can't make a 1 handed grab, but a holding pushes it back to the 4. McCaffrey caps a 17 yard, 3 minute 39 second drive with a power run for the TD. An O penalty prompts Sisters to try for 2, but a bad snap squashes that, and O hangs on to a 29-28 lead with 1:57 left in the quarter. Two O guys run together on the kickoff, and its blown dead, and given to O at ther 27. They did cover it. Stewart takes wide left for 73 down the sideline on the first play, and a 36-28 O lead after the Haueter kick @ 1:42.
Loren Stewart (1) clears the last Outlaw defender on a 73 yard scoring run.McCaffrey brings it out 8 yards, and cramps up. He's up, but out for a play. A Jackson catch on the sideline is ruled out of bounds, forcing a punt. Stewart sweeps left for 20, and to the right on an 8 yard stretch play, as the quarter ends with O on the Outlaw 35. 4th. qtr. Sisters is still having real trouble with Stewart outside. And he is magic at staying in bounds. A holding penalty, and a near sack forces 4th. & 18. A bad punt rolls over 20 yards for a 34 yard net. It was no where near anyone. The wind has let up. Time out Outlaws with 10:51 left, at their 25. Emery Meyer takes a pass 53 yards, but a block in the back brings it out to the 49. Emery Meyer blurs by an Ontario defender, but a block in the back is about to negate part of the gain. McCaffrey takes a direct snap, and goes straight ahead for 49 and the score! And he makes a great catch with a defender all over his arm for the tying conversion. 36-36 with 10:31 left! Stewart answers with a 26 yard kick return, but Goins answers, dropping him for a loss. Gamboni and Davenport force another loss. Pass right incomplete, not within 10 yards of anyone! O 44 yard punt.
Loren Stewart (1) completes a 26 yard kickoff return, out past the Ontario 40.Sisters at their 18, for a second. 82 yard bomb to Hodges down the right side! Hodges is almost too winded to make the kick, but he manages. Sisters to the lead, 43-36.
Tanner Hodges (24) is headed for an 82 yard touchdown. The kickoff goes out of bounds into the wind. Sisters rekick, and Stewart takes it up the left side 20 yards to the 42. Gaboni throws Stewart for a 10 yard loss.
Sisters’ Marcus Gamboni (17) drops Loren Stewart (1) for a 10 yard loss. So Sap hits Turner for 34, and rolls out for 20 more. A rollout right pass to Ryan Laubacher for the touchdown, and Haueter's kick, ties it at 43 with 6:22 to go!
Bryson Sap (5) throws for an Ontario touchdown.
Cory McCaffrey (1) brings the kickoff out for Sisters. McCaffrey for 23 on the return, Nick David trips up McCaffrey for no gain on what would have been a score! The officials move the sticks without a measurement O requested. Hasskamp makes it a moot point with a 35 yard strike to Meyer. Gryder drops an out at the 15! Hodges grabs a crossing route for a 24 yard touchdown. His kick makes it 50-43, with 3:18 left, as the sun comes out. Did the Outlaws leave too much time on the clock?
Tanner Hodges (24) scores for Sisters for the second time in the fourth quarter. David covers it at the Tiger 36. O @ the 50, 2:30 to go. Sap fumbles, but DJ Clayton recovers. Time Out Tigers @ 2:13! 18 yard completion to Stewart, and out of bounds.
Loren Stewart (1) working for yards for Ontario. Pass left to Laubacher at the 25! Pass right into a hole to Turner at the 14. 1:40 and running. Sap up the middle, and to the left for the touchdown with 1:31 to go.
Bryson Sap (5) scores to pull Ontario within 1 point. Time out O, down 50-4. O goes for 2! Stewart sweep right, STOPPED by Nieri & Tyler Miller, and Stewart is STAYING DOWN. He gets up after a while.
Loren Stewart is hemmed in by Dominic Nieri (5) and the Outlaw deferse. The Outlaw defense stops the 2 point conversion attempt to win the game. On side kick coming, as O has only 1 timeout left. Goins gets the loose ball at the 47. Hasskamp kneels, O timeout @ 1:28. Hasskamp for 2, mark @ 1:12, 3rd. down. Hasskamp for 1, time out Sisters with 5.8 left, 4th. down. McCafrey runs around, looses 3, but time runs out, and the Outlaws win 50-49! Postgame The last play produced some concern, as McCaffrey had a shoulder problem after the tackle. McCaffrey assured everyone "I'm ok. It has happened before. My shoulder just popped out a little, but its fine." MaCauley also noted Hodges' efforts, as he hauled in 7 catches for 201 yards, and 2 touchdowns, as well as 4 extra points. "Tanner had a hamstring cramp on that last kick, and we were wildly working on it. It was another great effort by him, as well." Hasskamp was a big part of the Outlaw effort, that piled up 700 yards, completing 19 of 33 passes for 440 yards, and 4 touchdowns, without an interception. MaCauley observed "Jared is the best quarterback no one in the state, except all other football coaches, knows about." Ontario had 462 yards from scrimmage, as well as 49 points, but defense still was key. MaCauley said "This is the first time I've ever called for a cheer for a defense that gave up 49 points, but today, they deserve it. That Ontario team is a H#@$ of a good team. We have tremendous respect for them. We needed every stop, just like last week against North Bend." MaCauley also explained "North Bend exposed some things, and we had to address them, or we wouldn't have beaten Ontario. We thought we had a good game plan, but (Ontario RB Loren) Stewart didn't like it. He ran all over. Now, we have more to work on." MaCauley did announce that the Monday morning 7AM meeting is cancelled, but reminded his team "We have work to do next week at Reser. See you at the film session at 3!" McCaffrey was "Actually tired of these close games. Hopefully, we can do something about that for next week. But we kept our composure under pressure real well. We were worried the entire second half, but the difference at this point comes down to you have to keep your composure!" As far as who they will face, McCaffrey noted "In a way, we are hoping Marist wins, just because we know them, and know what they do. We haven't seen Central, so I don't know much about them." But by that Monday film session, they will. As Coach MaCauley observed, "We are sending the team to the pizza parlor, but we coaches have about 1 hour to celebrate, then watch the 5:00 game, now that we have a vested interest in it."
