There are players that are just plain and simple fun to watch and Andre Broadhous is one of them. Easily one of the best dual threat quarterbacks anywhere in the Northwest, Broadhous took No. 4 ranked Grant out to the No. 9 ranked Southridge Skyhawks and when the smoke had cleared, the Generals marched back to Portland with a decisive 35-17 score that wasn't as close as it sounded.
Both teams boasted top flight defenses and the evening started out looking like it would be one of those low scoring affairs as Southridge held Grant to a three and out stand to open the game. On their first possession, the Skyhawks marched the ball down the the Grant 14 yard line on a great 29 yard open field run by junior quarterback Kellen Mastrud before stalling and missing a chip shot field goal. Both teams changed possessions before disaster struck for Southridge when Grant pounced on an errant pitch on the Skyhawk 16 yard line. A Broadhous to Alex Melson eight yard completion set up a three yard run from Lake Oswego transfer Buckingham and with 2 minutes left in the first quarter Grant went up 7-0. This seemed to fire up the Generals and the defense held the home team to yet another three and out and suddenly Grant reeled off a Broadhous 19 yard scamper; a 40 yard run from Kenneth Acker followed by a 10 yard touchdown run from Broadhous and it was 14-0. Southridge caught a huge break when they were again held to three and out but a muffed punt gave them the ball back on the Grant 4 yard line. While they failed to get it in for a touchdown, Trevor Harman delivered from 23 yards out on his second field goal attempt and it was 14-3 with 7:31 left in the second quarter. The two teams again traded three and outs before the PIL Champs exploded again with four first downs in five plays before Broadhous snuck it in from a yard out and at the half Grant went in with a comfortable 21-3 lead. The second half started out much like the first half, a defensive contest and a game of field positiion. The difference was that the yellow hankies started making frequent appearances after only hitting the turf twice in the first half. It looked like a blow out was at hand as Broadhous threw a nice touchdown grab to Paul McCoy only to have it called back for offensive pass interference and Southidge held Grant on downs. Three plays later Southridge's Kirk Werhane, who had trouble finding daylight all night long, fumbled and Grant's Broadhous recovered deep in Skyhawk territory. This time Broadhous hooked up with Melson for an eleven yard flair route to paydirt and a 28-3 lead and you could hear Dandy Don start humming his favorite MNF ballad. Except Mastrud and wide receiver Mitch Mathews weren't done as they hooked up for a quick 55 yard scoring play to make it 28-10 with 1:49 left in the third quarter. Grant reclaimed possession and marched to the Southridge 24 yard line before Broadhous was flushed and made an errant throw where Skyhawk linebacker Devin Wells rumbled 50 yards and leaving an alley of fallen Generals in his path before being dragged down at the Grant 29 yard line. On a crucial 4th and 7 with 6:09, Mastrud again found the 6'6 Mathews deep in the left corner of the west end zone and it was game on and a 28-17 score. Grant took over on the 30 and wasn't about to let them back into the game and Southridge did little to help themselves as Grant, thanks to a couple of personal fouls at midfield on the home team and some nifty running from Paul McCoy and Broadhous kept the chains moving. It was the Pepperdine bound McCoy who turned off the lights on the Skyhawks when he took it on on a darting 11 yard run to go up 35-17 with 3:33 left in the game (and the Pepperdine coaches were in attendance no doubt worrying about their prized basketball recruit). Mastrud had no more magic and ended up throwing his last pass of the night to the ball hawking Broadhous who then proceeded to run out the clock and take the Generals to an impressive 3-0 and looking at another tough road trip next weekend. This time to visit the dangerous Canby Cougars. Colleges are drooling over Broadhous who is electrifying when he runs but also posesses an excellent touch on his passes. Then again, tonight he was maybe more dangerous on defense. There is definite talent on this Grant team and I can see them giving Lake Oswego a run for their money if they can control the clock on the Lakers. Southridge on the other hand is also impressive but tonight just seemed to be 'a year away' from being one of the true elite teams in the state. Both teams have skill position depth galore. Grant did seem to have a decided edge in team speed and Southridge came out early trying to establish the running game but got behind too quickly. Mastrud is an excellent quarterback and Mathews a bonafide star as well. Still the star of the show was Andre Broadhous. He just has 'it.' |
