2018 Premature Playoff Predictions, Week 4

It's time for another season of Premature Playoff Predictions. Santiam Rolls In Opener VS Familiar Foe

Santiam had an amazing season in 2017, making a run all the way to the 2A State Finals after finishing as the runner-up in the very tough Tri-River League. Tonight they opened with a former league foe The Regis Rams on the road, and it was all Santiam in the 52-6 win out in Stayton.

Both teams had some miscues and penalties along with some stout defense, that saw the first quarter end with no score on the board. Santiam finally put together a solid drive in the second quarter that ended with Junior RB Brody Davidson punched in the first score for The Wolverines 2018 season from 4 yards out at the 9:04 mark. The two point conversion would fail. Santiam 6 Regis 0

The Wolverines are very solid in the backfield returning the two work horses from last year in Davidson and fellow Junior Trevor Tinney, and Tinney was the next to make his mark,  scoring after a very strong run up the left sideline with 6:23 left in the first half. The PAT once again would fail, but Santiam was starting to roll on both sides of the ball, while their defense was all over The Ram offense and Senior QB Kirkland Scott. Tinney was running so hard, you swore the kid was in two different jerseys for most of the first half ;)

Along with those two vaulted RB’s, The Wolverines also return one of my favorite players in Junior QB Colin Thurston. To think that these three kids will all be back again in 2019, The Wolverines are going to be tough for a while to come. Thurston showed his dual threat ability, by escaping a heated rush, and rolling for 35 yards on a keeper to score once again for Santiam with 2:44 left in the half. Thurston would add the two point conversion up the middle and the 20-0 Santiam lead, would hold until the half came to a close.

Regis came out of the locker room looking to get back into this one after holding Santiam on the opening drive.  Scott who has a nice strong arm, was able to find Junior TE Jakob Silbernagel  on a nice touch pass from 28 yards out after barely missing on the same exact call the play before, and Regis was showing some life with 6:03 left in the third quarter.

With Santiam looking for momentum again up 20-6, Davidson took a hand-off up the right side doing his impression of Marcus Allen reversing field mide carry, moving back over to the left side and saing see ya later from 63 yards out. The PAT came up short but Santiam had pushed the lead to 26-6 only a minute after The Regis score.

Santiam would not look back from there giving Regis nothing much the rest of the contest, while holding their foot on the offensive pedal until the final gun. Tinney would add another 20 yard scoring run with a converted PAT with 2:53 left in the third quarter making it 33-6 Santiam.

Junior DB Connor Forste would fall onto a fumble deep in Rams country on the following drive, and that once again set Tinney up for another score on the night punching one in from about 7 yards out. The PAT was no good and it was Santiam 39 Regis 6 still with 1:05 left in the third.

The Santiam defense just seemed to be cinching the noose even tighter and pretty much dealt the final blow on hopes of any miracle come back by The Rams, when Senior LB Dustin Keys stepped in front of a Scott pass, and went to the house from 73 yards out and when Junior Kicker Riley Rothrock added the PAT, it was Santiam 46-6 with a full 11:00 left in the contest. Sophomore RB JD Hakanson would add a final score before the night would come to a close, leaving the final Santiam 52 Regis 6.

Santiam will now travel to Heppner next week. Heppner is 0-1 after getting crushed by Clatskanie tonight 46-0. Regis will now travel out to face A tough Kennedy squad, who mauled Blanchet Catholic tonight 47-6. It sure will not get any easier for Regis after facing The tough Wolverine ground attack, as they will sure to be seeing a lot of Junior beast Emorej Lynk who is one of the premier athletes at 2A. A kid with speed, size and toughness(Listed 6’3 200).
