La Salle Outdistances Cascade

Falcons Take Bizarre Battle With Cougars

La Salle Cascade

Turner - In a non-conference matchup of one-time Capital Conference foes who have more than a little history between them, 5A La Salle out-scored 4A Cascade 41-30 in a game that had more twists and turns, and strange plays and calls, than one often sees in an entire month of football.

Cascade opened the game with a 65 yard drive, capped by Ethan Coffey's 1 yard touchdown run, but had an apparently successful 2 point conversion run from an odd bunch left formation negated because they had only 10 players on the field.

La Salle quarterback Ethan Edgerly quickly answered, with a 40 yard touchdown pass to James Menor, and shortly thereafter with a 52 yard run that set up a 20 yard touchdown toss to Casey Green to put the Falcons up 14-6 as the first quarter wound down.

But just as it looked like a shootout was on, most of the second quarter passed with more mistakes than offensive threats.

Cascade finally put together a drive late in the period, with an 18 yard Jake Whisman run that had a facemask penalty tacked on the key sequence that set up Nolan's 7 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Diehl that pulled the Cougars back within 1 point 36 seconds before halftime.

La Salle answered with a quick drive that reached the Cascade 10 yard line with 5.7 seconds left, but a pass to the goal line went off both a Falcon receiver and a Cougar defender, and the first half ended with the score 14-13 La Salle.

A near interception by La Salle would have set the Falcons up deep in Cascade territory early in the 3rd quarter, but it was ruled incomplete. Eventually, a 39 yard scoring run by Menor midway in the 3rd quarter opened the Falcon lead to 7, but the Cougars clawed back within 4 points on Joel Negrette's 30 yard field goal.

La Salle had a long return on the ensuing kickoff wiped away by an illegal fair catch signal call (when no signal was made), but the Falcons' Jajuan Lane immediately wiped away the effects of the penalty with a 45 yard run. He capped the drive shortly thereafter with a 21 yard touchdown run, and La Salle carried the resulting 27-16 lead into the 4th quarter.

Cascade fought into field goal position, but this time Negrette's 26 yard kick sailed wide left.

3 1/2 minutes after it could have been a 1 possession game, Menor's 35 yard touchdown run made it an 18 point game, and with only 7 minutes left, it looked like the Falcons had put the game out of reach.

Cascade refused to give up though. A 32 yard completion from Nolan to Whisman sparked a drive that was capped by the same 2 connecting for a 15 yard touchdown that, with a 2 point conversion pass out of the unusual formation they had used earlier, the Cougars had cut the deficit to 10 points again, with still almost half the 4th quarter to play.

Lane and Edgerly traded off sizable gains as La Salle answered with a 60 yard drive that Edgerly capped with an 18 yard touchdown run to make it a 17 point, 3 possession game with only 1:50 to go, but Nolan hit Diehl for 30 yards to midfield, and then found Whisman for a 50 yard touchdown on consecutive plays, with still over a minute and a half still to go.

Cascade covered the onside kick, but the ball was awarded to La Salle, apparently on the basis of an illegal touch before the ball had covered 10 yards, and the Falcons were able to run the clock out on the wild affair and claim their first win of the season.

La Salle squared their record at 1-1, while Cascade slipped to 0-2.
