Sprague high in Salem has been in the market for some time, after the retirement of Robin Hill, which was at once surprising, and also an indication of the standing of the Central Valley League in the 6A pecking order. Friday, Jay Minyard, once one of the hottest coaching prospects, but not so much lately, was announced as the new head coach of the Olympians.
Earlier in the week, and somewhat lost in the wild weather and March madness, was the announcement at West Linn that Mike Fanger will be stepping in for another recently retired long time fixture, Ron Chappell, who retired after 17 seasons as the leader of the Lions. This move too was not one everyone saw coming.

Casey, 53, officially announces his intention to coach at George Fox – an NCAA Division III school bringing football back in the fall of 2014 after a 45-year hiatus from the sport – at a press conference in the Multnomah Athletic Club’s Grand Ballroom at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. The club is located at 1849 S.W. Salmon St., in Portland. Casey guided Aloha to the high school Class 6A championship in 2010. Sweet Home AD/Boys Basketball Coach Arrested & ReleasedOregon High School Sports - General Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Friday, 06 April 2012 10:32 Hits: 946 Kostanty Knurowski Placed On Leave
Sweet Home Athletic Director and Boys' Basketball coach Kostanty Knurowski, 33, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of five counts of third degree sexual abuse. He was taken to the Linn County Jail and booked. Knurowski posted bail and was released.
Police began investigating Knurowski on March 26, after the family of a former Sweet Home High School student contacted them about events 2 years ago. The charges allege a pattern of sexual contact between Knurowski and the female student which lasted about seven months during the 2009-2010 school year.
The Sweet Home school district has placed Knurowski on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
"The district has taken steps to ensure that during this investigation Mr. Knurowski will not be around students at school," Sweet Home School District Superintendent Don Schrader said in a news release. "We absolutely want our students to feel safe at school. This kind of incident has an impact with our kids, with our staff, our staff were shocked about this whole thing, in all our schools. We don't want to see and have this kind of thing going on," Schrader said .
