Cascade Rolls Past North Marion

Cougars Jump To Early Lead & Cruise Past Huskies

Turner - Cascade jumped out early on North Marion, going up 22-0 not 4 minutes into the game, and the Cougars cruised from there to a 50-7 win over the Huskies Friday night to claim second place in the Oregon West League race.

Cascade entered the final week of the 4A regular season hoping to earn a share of the OWL championship, but that possibility went away with Philomath's league championship clinching 41-21 win over Stayton. The Cougars needed an Eagle win to forge a 3 way tie atop the OWL.

The Cougars came out roaring, with John Schirmer completing passes for 41 yards and then a 29 yard touchdown on the first and third plays of the game, both down the right side to Cameron Molan, in response to the Huskies stacking the box to contain Cascade running back Garrett Coffey.

North Marion's Noah Norris took a big hit while returning the ensuing kickoff, and Cascade covered the fumble that resulted on the Husky 15 yard line. Schirmer struck instantly, hitting Molan again over the middle for a touchdown, and Molan added the 2 point convesion on a sweep, as the Cougars were throwing the entire playbook at the Huskies right off the bat, taking a 15-0 lead a minute and a half into the game.

Cascade's defense, making their first appearance of the game already up 2 scores, forced a 3 and punt, and Schirmer hit Lucas Bjorklund for a 34 yard completion 2 plays later, putting the Cougars on the Husky 1 yard line.

"We're not just a running team, and we wanted to make a statement about that," Cascade coach Steve Turner said.

2015 Premature Playoff Predictions, Week 7

Hi. I'm Jeff. I do spreadsheets. Not for a living, or anything, but...well, I just do.

With 2 weeks (1 for 4A) left in the regular season, I'm back to make a stab at the following question:  So, where we playing in the playoffs?

Here's what I did.

I used the website www.calpreps.com to semi-educatedly guess who's going to win every game for the next 3 weeks, plug in all those results and see what my sheets spew out at the end. That having been said, there are probably some boo-boos I need to catch over the next 3 weeks, but I'll do my best.

And now, for your entertainment purposes, I present a table. It's what calpreps is thinking. If you want a copy of what I've got, email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Thanks for reading. ~JD~

Santiam Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Looking to keep playoff hopes alive, The St Paul Buckeroos welcomed The Santiam Wolverines into the fairgrounds arena on home coming night, and provided one heck of a ball game, in one heck of a small high school venue. What a beautiful place to watch a match between two small, yet tight knit communities.

2015 Premature Playoff Predictions, Week 5

Hi. I'm Jeff. I do spreadsheets. Not for a living, or anything, but...well, I just do.

With 4 weeks (3 for 4A) left in the regular season, I'm back to make a stab at the following question:  So, where we playing in the playoffs?

Sprague Holds Off West Salem 29-21

Young Oly D "Grows Up", and Anthony Nunn Tramples Titans

Anthony Nunn DSC03501Salem - Sprague used West Salem turnovers early to get in position to have Anthony Nunn, left, stomp West Salem into the turf, and another late, and the Olympians held off the visiting Titans for a 29-21 win Friday night.

Sprague seized a lead they would never relinquish right off the bat, scoring on Nunn's 3 yard run not 3 minutes into the game, capitalizing on a short field after West Salem's Kyle Terry fumbled at the end of a sweep run on the second play of the game. David Prosser recovered the loose ball at the West Salem 45, and Nunn carried 5 times on the 7 play drive, including converting a 4th and 1 situation at the Titan 8 yard line.

West responded by driving into Sprague territory, but stalled in "no man's land", and turned the ball over on downs at the Oly 32, outside of quarterback/kicker Brody Wittman's field goal range, when Wittman's pass over the middle fell incomplete.

Sprague couldn't drive the ball out of their own territory, and then set West up with a short, 23 yard punt that would foretell what would be special teams trouble that plagued Sprague over the course of the evening.

The Titans took advantage of good field position to again drive to midfield, but just before the end of the first quarter, Sophann Oum picked off Wittman at the Oly 45 to thwart the threat and set Sprague up for another short-field scoring drive.

North Marion Makes Swiss Cheese Out Of Tillamook

Huskies Roll To 30 Point Win In Home Opener

Aurora - The North Marion Huskies came back home looking to get into the win column, and that is exactly what they did as they cruised to a 37-7 victory over The Tillamook Cheese Makers. After visiting two of the top programs in all of 4A to open the season, The Huskies looked sharp on both sides of the ball to seal the first victory of the season for the home crowd out in Aurora.

Tillamooks Zach Macias, received the opening kickoff from North Marions Jr QB/Kicker Tanner Scanlan, advancing it to the Tillamook 33 yard line after a short return and a horse collar penalty was added to the end of the short run. The Huskies Defense came out very aggressive, and forced Tillamook into a punting situation deep in their own territory, on 3 straight stuffs. On 4th and 12, The Tillamook long snap was a bit off, forcing Kaler Moore to scramble for his life around the end where The Huskies stopped the progress to set up shop for their first drive of the night, 35 yards away from pay dirt.

North Marion, then began their first scoring drive of the night, with Scanlan at the controls of the good ol’ multi-faceted  Wing T. Junior Ammon Suchanski got the call on the first two carries, rambling for 18 yards combined before Senior Brian Westman was called upon adding another 12 yard carry and a 1st and Goal from The Tilly 6 yard line. Senior Austin Ledesma, was stopped for no gain on 1st down, and then The Huskies struck gold. Scanlan took the snap, and dropped back looking for Senior WR Josiah Ramon, on a beautiful fade to the deep corner that could not have been thrown any prettier for the opening score. Setting up for The PAT, Ramon mishandled the snap, but picked up the ball in a scramble before letting a pass go to Senior Noah Norris, and at the 8:39 mark of the 1st Qtr, NM is up 8-0.

Scio Breaks Away From Blanchet

Anthony Johnson DSC02519Loggers Run To Early Lead And Hold Off Cavaliers

Scio - In an early showdown in the first week of PacWest Conference action, 4th ranked Scio ran through suspect tackling for four long touchdown runs early on, and then held on for a 42-20 win over visiting 3rd ranked Blanchet.

Anthony Johnson, left, and Dillion Robinson alternated making sweeps to the right and left, and breaking multiple tackles, for 78 and 71 yard touchdown romps in the first quarter, and followed that up with 55 and 31 yard arm tackle breaking cutback runs for 2 more second quarter scores to put the Loggers up 28-0 before the middle of the second period.

Nathan Yoder added another Scio score with just over a minute left before halftime, set up by consecutive runs for 17 and 13 yards by Johnson, before Blanchet finally rallied to get on the scoreboard 13 seconds before the break.

Freshman quarterback R.J. Veliz completed 15 and 16 yard passes on the drive, and capped the series with a sprint in from 3 yards out, making it 34-6.

MWL/SWC Week 2

Happy Anniversary!

What anniversary is that, you ask?

This blog is now 10 years old! I started this thing as a Midwestern League blog on Wordpress during the 2005-06 season, and here we are now, ten years later. What’s changed?

Well, it’d be easier to say what hasn’t changed.
