ASHLAND — Ashland rallied from nine points back with little more than a minute to play and forced overtime in nonconference boys basketball against visiting Grants Pass Tuesday.
But the Cavemen had just enough to pull out a 62-60 win in the extra session at Ashland Middle School.
Jordan Resch led the Grizzlies with 16 points, and Mason Costantino added 14, thanks to four second-half 3-pointers.
With Ashland trailing 53-44 and fresh off a pair of turnovers with 1:20 left, Grants Pass returned the favor with a turnover of its own to give the Grizzlies new life. Costantino missed two 3s, but Resch rebounded the second and made a long-range jumper.
Ashland's full-court press forced another GP turnover on the next possession. Coming out of a timeout, sophomore Billy Hansen made a 3-pointer to cut it to 53-50 with 30 seconds left.
GP's Matt Nottingham was trapped by a pair of Grizzlies and turned it over on the next play. Three different Grizzlies then got chances to tie it — Resch, Hansen and Pavlich all missed from deep — before the third offensive rebound of the possession was passed out to Costantino behind the 3-point line. The senior guard's shot was true, making it 53-all with 12 seconds left and forcing overtime.
Grants Pass was limited to one field goal in the extra frame, but converted seven free throws to seal the win.
The Cavemen led by two with eight seconds left, but Ronnie Fields(game high 19 points) missed two free throws to give Ashland a chance. However, Reed Chasmar's runner for the tie hit off the front rim.
