South Medford Completes Perfect Season

Written by Andrew Millbrooke Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:03    Hits: 1142

South Medford  defeats Westview 61 to 46

PORTLAND - #1-ranked and undefeated South Medford would not be

denied a perfect season as they controlled the game from the start in a

61 to 46 victory over Westview at the Rose Garden on Saturday night to
claim the 6A girls State Championship.  South Medford completed a

perfect 30-0 season.  The Panthers forced 7 first quarter turnovers,

leading to easy transition baskets and big early lead.  South Medford

started out  hot by hitting 7 of its first 12 shots – including two three-pointers

 – while holding Westview to 2 of 9 shooting.  5'11 sophomore Ashley Bolston

was an early spark, scoring 6 points and dishing out 3 assists in the opening

quarter as the Panthers jumped to an 18-6 lead.  It had all the makings of a
blowout.

Westview had other ideas, forcing the Panthers into turnovers

and getting its crowd into the game in the second quarter, cutting into

the Panthers lead with easy baskets and free throws.  5'7 junior point guard
Yaremi Mejia hit a jumper and a three-pointer to keep South Medford
in the lead, but the Wildcats got a favorable charging call late in
the quarter and then 6' junior Sarah Curl drained a three-pointer
before the halftime buzzer, cutting the deficit to 30-25.  All of a
sudden we had a game.

Henley Out-Sutherlins Sutherlin For 4A Title

Morgan Has Monster Night For Hornets

henley1Elle Morgan served notice right away with a 3 pointer from the left corner that the Hornets were not in awe of the undefeated Blue Bulldogs.

Another jumper by Morgan and one from Racyne Parker put Henley ahead 7-0, and Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting had to use a timeout to regroup not even halfway thru the first quarter.

Morgan, left, would go on to a 19 point night, and it would be too much for Sutherlin to overcome, and Henley claimed the 2012 OSAA 4A State Championship with a 41-35 win.

Banks Bravely Fights Back Past Philomath

banks1Showing maturity and grit, Banks bounced back not only from seeing their 4A State Championship hopes dashed by Sutherlin, but also a double digit fourth quarter deficit, and even a Warrior rally after they had apparently taken the upper hand, and claimed the Third Place trophy with a a 38-35 win over Philomath.

“Wow! I’m so proud of these girls. After last night, that was very disappointing. And then to fall behind today and not quit,” Banks coach Nick Rizzo said. “These kids have really grown up. The maturity they have gained will serve them the rest of their life.”

And Banks did it despite Philomath making 19 free throws in the game, which accounted for more than half the Warrior points.

Most of Banks' production came from Melissa Masters, left, who scored 15 points.

White Buffalos Claim Corvallis Consy

Madras made a second half comeback to capture the OSAA 4A Girls' 4th place trophy, with a 52-49 win over Mazama.

The Vikings led after the initial score of the game until the last basket of the third quarter, holding leads of 17-13 after the opening period, 29-18 (the largest lead of the game) on a LeAnn Valenta jumper, and 32-24 at the half.

But a Mariah Stacona 3 pointer 11 seconds before the end of the 3rd quarter pushed the White Buffalos back in front. Stacona made 6 of 8 shots in the game, and finished with 16 points.

Sutherlin Shuts Down Banks

Hill And Mendenhall UnManagable

sutherlin3Sutherlin’s Kelsey Hill had the only basket in the first 3 ½ minutes, as the game was yet another in the run of defensive battles that has characterized this year’s OSAA 4A State Tournament.

But while Hill, left, the Blue Bulldogs’ senior leader, had a game high 19 points, Miranda Mendenhall, one of 2 freshmen that start for Sutherlin also came up huge, with 10 points. And she anchored the suffocating Sutherlin defense that was the key to the 39-32 win that sends them into Saturday night’s championship game.

“Miranda is already the best defender I’ve ever had,” Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said.

Banks only shot 11% in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the game, but only trailed 8-3 as a result, and so baskets by Kayla Hardie and Samantha Duyck had the Braves right back in it.

But the Braves overlooked Mendenhall on an inbounds play, and an uncontested 3 pointer from the top of the key made it 11-7 Sutherlin after one quarter.

Henley Stings Philomath

Hornets Capitlaize On “Divine Intervention”

Elle_Morgan_DSC00595Skyline Champion Henley appeared to have the first 4A girls’ semifinals won until Philomath, the Champions of the Oregon West League, got a game tieing basket with .2 seconds left, and a foul to boot. But the crucial free throw for the win didn’t fall.

Neither did the 3 pointer that would have forced a second overtime, and the Hornets pulled out the 40-37 win.

Elle Morgan, left, had 6 first quarter points, and it was the difference early on in the defensive battle, where both teams looked to push the pace, but neither was able to make good on their efforts on a consistent basis, and the Hornets held a 12-8 advantage after one quarter.

Shooting struggles from the floor continued to plague the Warriors in the second quarter, and even with the benefit of a couple of runouts, they didn’t gain any ground despite 10 first half points by Tegan Grunwald, until a 3 pointer by Madeline Lehman pulled Philomath to within 20-19.

Henley answered with baskets by Brittany Kochenderfer and Allie Fahner in the last 20 seconds to actually extend to a 24-19 halftime lead, by shooting 50% compared to 37% for Philomath.

Consolation Quick Summary - Madras and Mazama Remain

Highway 97 Rivals take I5 Detour To Consy Finals

Madras and Mazama moved on to Saturday morning’s Consolation Finals for the 4th and 6th place trophies with wins Thursday morning.

The Tri-Valley Champion White Buffalos beat the Skyline runnerup Vikings 54-45 back on December 9.

Madras made a multitude of second half free throws to pull away from Tillamook, and take a 47-32 breakfast bracket win in the morning’s first game.

Mazama claimed a hard fought 57-48 win over Cascade to send the defending OSAA 4A State Champions home early.

Shooting struggles are what sent both top ranked Madras and previously once beaten Tillamook to the morning games, and the problem persisted, with both teams shooting under 30% for the game. The Cheesemakers in particular struggled early, connecting on under 19% of their shots in the first half, though they did recover to shoot a relatively good (but not really) 35% after the break.

The difference was at the free throw line in the second half. Tillamook held a 17-13 halftime lead, but Madras, after only getting to the line 2 times in the first 16 minutes, made 21 trips to the line in the later half of the game, and knocked down 18 of them.

Abby Scott had to carry most of the load for Madras in the tournament opener against Philomath, but Rosey Suppah showed up in a big way for the second day, knocking down 10 of 11 free throws on her way to a game high 23 points. Scott sank 7 of 10 at the line, and finished with 14 points, which with her game team high 12 rebounds, gave her a double double.

It was too much for Tillamook to match, as the Cheesemakers got 11 points from Cheyenne Hahn, but the ‘Mooks only made 2 of 9 from the line, and bowed out without ever getting their offense in gear.

Sutherlin Dethrones Cascade

Hill Powers Bulldogs Past Cougars

sutherlin2Defending state 4A Champion Cascade (21-5) entered the tournament with the lowest OSAA RPI of the 8 teams, 9th, while unbeaten Sutherlin (26-0), the 2008 champion, carried in the #2 RPI, though only the 34th SOS (of 42 4A teams).

With both teams starting only a single senior, and only one more between the 2 benches, both teams are potentially still a year away from their best play. It didn't look that way in the game that unfolded though.

But in the end, it was one of the seniors, Kelsey Hill, left, who got the job done for Sutherlin. Hill, held to just 4 points in the first half, exploded for 18 after the break to carry the Bulldogs to a 41-38 win, and into the final 4.

"Kelsey wasn't happy with her performance in the first half, and quite frankly, neither were we," Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting said. "She really came back out strong in the second half, but it was really a team effort. The rest of the girls look to her, and they looked for her."

Defense dominated the early action, and it was only 2-1 Bulldogs 2/12 minutes into the game when Miranda Mendenhall stepped outside for a 3 pointer putting Sutherlin up 5-1.

Kassi Sanders briefly slowed the Bulldogs with a 3 pointer, which would be her only points of the first half, but Lainey Corbett answered with a long range bomb of her own for a 6 point lead.

Banks Too Tough For Mazama

Braves Come Up Big When The Going Got Tough

Banks1Mazama (23-5), 3rd in the OSAA RPI, and Banks (19-4), 6th in the RPI, both had something to prove, after both lost opening round games last year at Gill, and wound up facing each other in the 4th/6th place game, with the Vikings prevailing 42-36.

But it was the Braves who brought the tougher mindset to the contest. Their mostly 2-3 zone (vs the 1-3-1 some times seen by Banks) tonight also proved more effective than the Vikings' man to man, ultimately holding Mazama to 22% shooting.

Banks took the upper hand early, and when Mazama made their run, the Vikings caught up, tieing the game at 28 apiece a minute into the 4th quarter, the Braves never allowed them to pull ahead. When the play and the call got tough, Banks responded with a 16-3 run, and claimed the 44-33 win.

"These gals have been in a lot of big games," Braves coach Nick Rizzo noted. "They were here last year, and they have played for a state softball championship. They are familiar with the big stage, even though they haven't been able to quite come thru. As a result they are very hungry. And because they have been through a lot, they have really matured. It showed tonight in crunch time"

Banks led the majority of the first period, though never by more than the 4 point, 14-10 advantage they ended the quarter with. Melissa Masters, above, had half the Braves' early points, while Hannah Reynolds carried most of the load for the Vikings, with 6. Masters and Marla Gooding's 3 pointers were the difference.

Henley Rallys Past Tillamook

Hornets Sting Cheesemakers With 17-3 4th Quarter Rally

Tillamook (20-1) was a basket against Banks away from bringing a perfect record into Gill Coliseum for the OSAA 4A Girls' Tournament, but Henley (22-4) actually was one spot higher in the OSAA RPI ratings, and a much higher Strength of Schedule, #2 vs. #24 for the Cheesemakers, had a lot to do with that.

Henley took early 3-0 and 5-4 leads, but Tillamook took the lead on a Keleigh Hoopes layup midway in the first quarter, and that started an 11-3 run the rest of the period, capped by Brooke Klahn's 3 pointer, to take a 15-8 lead.

The 'Mooks' Sara Strang made it a 13-3 run a minute into the second quarter, but the 17-8 lead would turn out to be the largest of the game.

The Hornets twice got the deficit down to 4 points, and trailed 23-18 at the halftime break.
