IMG_9512_edited-1Michael Meeks and his Southridge Skyhawks (25-2) must be living the 'good life.' With Oregon City (27-1) breathing down their necks in an intense final eight minutes, they calmly went to the free throw line and during one stretch coverted three of 12 free throws. Thats 25% of their attempts. More amazing, during that stretch, they actually increased their lead as they rallied in the fourth quarter to move into Saturday's Championship Game against Jesuit thanks to what Jack Black lovingly refers to as "Tenacious D."

For South Eugene, the task of taking dual back to back victories over Portland's girl basketball powerhouses Central Catholic and Jesuit proved too much. For Jesuit it was sweet revenge and a shot at the one state title that has eluded them, a girls state basketball championship. After a close first half, the Crusaders slowly squeezed the Lady Axemen and marched into another chance for redemption when they take on Metro Champion Southridge tommorow at 7pm at the Rose Garden.

If you could put a coat and tie on him and hand him a rolled up program, Jesuit Head Coach Mike McNeal would bear a striking resemblance to a young John Wooden. In Friday's semi-final his girls did all the things required of a championship team. They executed. In doing so, they also executed the dreams of a South Eugene team who had been aiming at this year to take the title only to see it disappear in a slew of turnovers and an inability to keep the Metro League runner-ups off the offensive glass.

Franklin's Shoni Schimmel had a miserable game. Miserable shooting and a tough night. Still, her stat line read 26 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals. (okay 10-30 from the field and 7 turnovers)....If only we could all play that miserable.

Jesuit may have lost the battle of tempo but they won the war and that was all Coach Mike McNeal could ask for as the Crusaders kept Franklin at arms length most the game and escaped with a convincing 83-70 win.

South Eugene hangs on for a tough win over fiesty Central Catholic

South Eugene 49 Central Catholic 46

As South Eugene Coach Steve Eastburn walked off the court, he must have reflected on the late Al McGuire's famous line "It is better to be lucky than good.' His Axemen executed early on and successfully got Central Catholic frosh post Kailee Johnson in foul trouble. A big second quarter would give the Southwest Conference champions a 30-22 cushion at the half, yet the Rams would not roll over.

Unbeaten Royals (26-0) seek perfection; TRC sends 3 challengers

IMG_8040_edited-1Every year, the 2A girls basketball tournament sees the return of some familiar faces as well as newcomers to the former Phoenix Suns NBA hardcourt. This year, the Tri-River Conference sends three top ten teams in #2 Salem Academy, #5 Scio and #7 East Linn Christian Academy. Returning from last year’s tournament are # 9 Oakland (MVC #1) and #3 St. Mary’s (SCL #1). Unranked Lakeview (SCL #2) returns after a disappointing 2008 showing, while #4 Heppner represents the pride of Eastern Oregon.

Rounding out the field is unbeaten #1 Portland Christian, making an unprecedented 12th consecutive appearance at what many consider to be the best OSAA playoff venue in any classification – the Pendleton Convention Center. Join us as we preview Wednesday’s quarterfinal action here at OregonPrepSports.net.

There is a scene in Tarantino's "Kill Bill" where Uma Thurman has been buried and left for dead. Well she's not. She comes out of a deep slumber fueled from 53 gunshot wounds and feeling refreshed, and using her kung fu knuckles, she starts banging away on the coffin lid above until dirt starts falling in. Thankfully she has a flashlight so we can watch in transfixed fascination.  Two 5A Girls teams get my "Uma Thurman"  Award for having been shot and buried and left for dead. Take a bow.....Summit and Liberty. Both teams took down their bitterest foes Tuesday as Summit squeaked by Mountain View and Liberty knocked down Century and rather than looking forward to a Spring sport, their teams look like good bets 'to play another day.'

Sherwood Holds Off Century 53-48

The fine line between Century and Sherwood can be measured on 'who wants the game more on that night.' The first time around, it was pretty clear when Century visited Sherwood and came away with a 52-44 win that it was the Jaguars who enforced their will. Friday at Century it was the Bowmen who refused to yield as they held off repeated rallies to even up the head to head in what could be a deciding factor come playoff time. Sherwood's 53-48 win moved them into a tie with Century for the #3 Seed and now both trail Glencoe by a single game as they all come down the home stretch. (que up the sounds of a horse race)

It may not be set in stone but more of a wet cement that Central Catholic, Franklin, Southridge and McNary will enjoy the fruits of their labor and kick back with some popcorn to watch the OSAA Girls State First Round action on Tuesday, March 2nd. After a visit to my local clairvoyant Krystal Ballin, I'm happy to reveal some gems that will unfold along the way to the Rose Garden. With a one month countdown about to start, lets see where the Bracketology leads us.

It is just me or does it seem like there's Jefferson and then oodles and oodles of teams worthy of getting to the state tournament but few challengers to the Demo's who, in my book, proved their mettle by hanging tough with Mater Dei? Right now, the conference races are pretty decided in a few (PIL, NWOC, SSC) leagues and just a crazy jalopy derby in the others (IMC, MidWilly and Midwestern). Lets see who's looking pretty and who better put on some make-up soon if they want to get to the " Pit" Dance!

But first a shout-out to the Sherwood Swoosh Tournament this coming weekend. For those wanting to get a look at the true diaper dandies, this 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Girls Tournament has got some real pizazz. The recent addition of the Willamette 8th Grade team makes it notable. Both Willamette Head Coaches Lance Haas and Paul Brothers carry pictures of this team around in their wallet they're so proud of them. They'll lock horns with the likes of local juggernauts Clackamas and Oregon City. Corvallis has a 6'0 point guard who's pretty sweet. If she's anything like her Dad, OSU Coach Craig Robinson, then I'll bet she can bang down low as well. IMG_0725_1PORTLAND – Junior point guard Brittaney Niebergall dazzled onlookers Saturday night by scoring 29 points in the first half as top-ranked and undefeated Portland Christian cruised to a 80-20 win over Gaston in 2A NWL play. Niebergall scored 18 points in the Royals’ 37-7 opening period and finished the game with a team record 35 points, despite not playing the fourth period.

Beavertons Head Coach Jay Ego shattered the Gary Lavendar Two Mile Invitational when he parked his car along I-217 after spending the past two hours in gridlock and ran through the snow through hill and dale to make it up to the Nike Interstate Shootout in time to watch his girls defeat Thurston 64-40 at Lake Oswego on Tuesday evening. All games for the evening session semi-finals have been cancelled and rescheduled for tomorrow. Here's the latest updates:
