23-7 Run Breaks Open Tie Game

The Washington all star squad, featuring nine players committed to Division I programs, used a 23-7 second half run to break open the game, and defeat the Oregon team by ten points. The 75-65 win at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus was Washington's second consecutive win in the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout, and gives Washington a 9-7 edge in the series.

Washington lead by four points early in the second half, but Newberg's Hannah Munger connected on a pair of free throws, and then Tigard's Corinn Waltrip's layup tied the game at 39-39. But then  Washington opened up a 16 point lead, with the 23-7 run, effectivele ending Oregon's hopes.

Oregon tried to fight back during and after the run with full court pressure on defense, but couldn't ever rattle Washington for long.

Lynder's Kenzie DeBoer and Sarah Kliewer from Spokane's Lewis and Clark High, who is headed back to the University of Portland next year, provided the bulk of the run.

DeBoer finished with a game high 20 points in only 21 minutes, and Kliewer finished with 17 points. The physically more dominant Washington team also connected on 24 free throws, including eight by DeBoer, while Oregon only got to the line 21 times.

"We knew they would go hard to the hoop," Oregon coach Kevin Schmidt said. "Truth is, we had big efforts from a few kids that kept them from blowing us out."

Waltrip led Oregon with 16 points, and Munger, Newberg's post, blocked three shots, and scored 13 points, the only Oregon players in double digits.

Reynolds guards Renee Tzeo and Sutherlin forward Tess Bennett added eight and seven points, respectively.

"We wanted to show them what we had," Waltrip said. "I think we surprised some people," referring to how close most of the game was. "It was kind of demoralizing when they went on that run. In an all-star game, you think you can prevent that."
