It was the story of one team rebuilding and one reloading. Sherwood came into Corvallis looking up the polls at Corvallis but at the end of the game it was the Bowmen looking ahead and down the road at Crater after mopping up after a very decisive 36-7 win.
Junior Kevin Hausner had a big pair of shoes to fill with NWOC Offensive MVP Derek Kotowski graduating and this Bowman fullback showed why Sherwood may have the best 'plug in and play' system in the state. On the first play from scrimmage, Hausner went for 30 yards. By the end of the first quarter he had over 100 yards and Sherwood had rolled up a 23-0 lead. For the evening, Hausner would ring up three scores and rush for over 160 yards with explosion plays going ifor 30,24,54 and 48 yards. Clearly Corvallis was a team out of sync early while Sherwood looked in mid-season form. The Wing T befuddled the Spartans and Sherwood took the opening kick off and spent six plays before Hausner rolled into the endzone from two yards out. Corvallis received the kickoff and Bowman D-back Sam Karpeles snagged the first of his two interceptions of the evening. Hausner struck again with a run off the right side for 54 yards before fullback Cody Wilson plunged in from a yard out. The Spartans had one last bad series in them when after the ensuing kickoff they went three and out and on fourth down snapped the ball over the punters head and out the back of the endzone. The second quarter found the home team finally getting some rythm while the visitors lost their adrenalin. Corvallis stopped Sherwood on three straight plays and forced the punt (kick) then managed to toss the second pick to Karpeles who had a nice return before fumbling it away back to Corvallis. Still the field position was the first time Spartans had crossed midfield all night. After a punt, Hausner fumbled on the Sherwood 7 yard line and it was an opportunity Corvallis could not pass up as speedy receiver Daryl Watkins posted the Spartans first touchdown of the season on a nice pass from Kevin Younger. With 40 seconds left in the half, Hausner struck paydirt again from 2 yards out and Sherwood went to the half with a comfortable 30-7 lead. The second half was more a chance for Sherwood to play their deep bench and Corvallis to shake the kinks out after losing a majority of their State Championship team to graduation. Corvallis showed they had some playmakers who will step up as the season progresses. Kevin Younger showed he has a nice touch on his passes and he and Watkins will be a good combo. The hard running of Chris Henry will develop and give the Spartans some talent to keep defenses honest. At one stretch in the third quarter, Henry ripped off three straight runs of 12 yards or better. Corvallis take this game and chalk it up to a game last year, the West Albany game they lost early in the season. The Spartans are young but clearly have the potential to get things rolling and make the playoffs. Sherwood's Ian Donovan looked good in his first start of the season, playing under control and looking accurate with most his passes going in Kole Kriegers direction. They'll need their passing game clicking next week to keep Crater from stacking the box. Both teams had trouble with turnovers but that seems to be the story for season openers more often than not. Now the Bowmen need to get ready for a Comet team stlill stinging from the loss to Wilsonville and looking for redemption. Football season is here!! |
