Oregon's High School Sports SourcePacky's Picks-Boy's 4A Basketball 1/9/2009Oregon High School Sports - Boys Basketball Written by Greg Stackhouse (Packy) Thursday, January 8, 2009 11:23am Hits: 26 Chalk Looks Good
After the first night of league play there where some surprises. Taft showing Philomath they have a program too. Marist finding out Sisters is for real, and their road to Gill will be a little tougher this year. Phoenix and Henley showing, there will be, some wars for the Skyline #2 and #3 seeds. Sutherlin proving they are in the hunt with the other Dogs in the Farwest. For the most part though, the favorites in each league showed there stuff. The Capitol and the Greater Oregon, start playing for their tickets to the big dance Friday night. With there no clear cut favorite yet in the Capitol, and the Greater Oregon always showing they have a league to be reckoned with. The fun is really going to get rolling, and after the first night of league play, we see why they play the games, but here are my picks anyway. Packy's Picks- Girls 4A Basketball 1/9/2009Oregon High School Sports - Girls Basketball Written by Greg Stackhouse (Packy) Thursday, January 8, 2009 01:00pm Hits: 12 SkyEm Shakeup or Shakeout?
After the first night of league play, where there any surprises? We'll maybe, North Bend's 22 point win over Douglas, Astoria beating the 'Poose by 11, Sisters only losing to Marist by 4, or Estacada's 10 point victory over the Lady Cubs. All these, I guess, could be considered a little surprising. Going into the second night of league play and the Capitol and Greater Oregon starting there bids for a trip to Gill, will definitely add to all the fun. Especially with the Capitol showing to be the league of big battles every night. There's only 3 tickets to the big dance and possibly 6 teams worthy of getting a ticket. Wow! Whose not a contender in the Capitol? LOL! Then there is Sky-Em with 4 top 11 teams, and the Outlaws getting better every game, and only those 3 tickets to go around. And the Skyline is showing they are going to have some fun with 3 top ten teams of there own. Then there's the Farwest having the #1 team in the state and the Valco, Cowapa, and the Greater Oregon having some sorting out to do of their own. It is really shaping up to be a great season, with many questions to be answered. We know the games will have to be played to get the answers but here are my picks anyway #4 Southridge Shocks #1 Jesuit 63-42Oregon High School Sports - Girls Basketball Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Wednesday, January 7, 2009 08:46am Hits: 55 Skyhawks Still Really #1?
Maybe it wasn’t a shock that fourth ranked Southridge won a home game, even against top ranked Jesuit. After all, they are the four time defending state champions. But to win by 21 has to qualify as one of the statement wins so far this season.
In control all game long, the Skyhawks, who have been underdogs as often as not so far this season, continued to use that mentality to drive their efforts. Effort that broke open a close, 15-12 game in the second quarter, when the Skyhawks made a 16-3 run, and opened a 31-15 halftime lead.
Sherwood Slogs Past Wilsonville 33-22Oregon High School Sports - Girls Basketball Written by Don Francis Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:11pm Hits: 66 This year the NWOC Girls Basketball seedings will be determined on who holds home court and steals a few road wins. Sherwood held serve in the league opener by defeating their mirror image of a team in Wilsonville. Two teams with excellent post play and desperately needing to groom new guards, Sherwood took charge early and never looked back to jump their rival behind great play from seniors Lauren Codling and Brittany Morales on Tuesday with a tough defensive grind it out 33-22 in what can best be described as a game 'as pretty as a baboon's bottom.'
Regis Repels Jefferson 56-39Oregon High School Sports - Boys Basketball Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Tuesday, January 6, 2009 11:04pm Hits: 81 Threes Key Ram Runs
Regis answered Jefferson’s three point shooting with some of their own, and the seventh ranked Rams rolled to a 56-39 win over the Lions to maintain their hold on first place in the Pac West conference.
Jefferson used three three point baskets to stay close to Regis, trailing 14-11 after the first quarter. Leading only 17-15 with 1:45 left before halftime, a Derek Piete three started a 7-0 Ram run. The Lions cut the lead back down to 24-18 by break time.

And the 8:00 pm championship game started at 8:01 pm. Priceless ... Once again Salem Academy rolled out the carpet and provided 3A and 2A players, coaches, fans and officials with three days of the best small classification hoops prior to the playoffs. Congratulations to SAC coach and AD Pete Potloff, and his army of SAC volunteers who made it all possible.

SAC Boys Tourney = Willamette Preview?Oregon High School Sports - Boys Basketball Written by Bruce McCain Monday, December 29, 2008 01:17pm Hits: 297 No one can accuse Salem Academy boys coach and AD Pete Potloff of padding his holiday tournament with an easy field guaranteed to place his 2A Crusaders into the championship game. Instead, coach Potloff has loaded up his tournament with six 3A teams, including four ranked in the top six spots in the latest 3A coaches poll. Despite the presence of 2A defending champs Portland Christian, the 5th annual Crusader New Years Invitational has morphed from a potential 2A Pendleton preview to a likely 3A Willamette preview. 3A #2 Santiam Christian faces 3A #5 Valley Catholic in Thursday's boys opener. That game is followed by 2A defending champs Portland Christian (2A #4) meeting 3A #6 Rainier. In Thursday's late openers, Umatilla (3A #11) pits 3A's highest scoring offense against 3A #1 Cascade Christian, owner of the state's best scoring defense. Finally, the host Crusaders (2A #6) play 3A Willamina to cap what should be a terrific New Years Day of boys (and girls) hoops. OregonPrepSports.net will provide complete coverage of the SAC Crusader New Years Invitational. But first, let's take a quick look at each of the eight boys teams meeting in what many consider to be Oregon's top holiday tournament for 3A/2A schools. SAC Girls Tourney Best Ever?Oregon High School Sports - Girls Basketball Written by Bruce McCain Sunday, December 28, 2008 07:19pm Hits: 278 Though the name has been changed from "Crusader Christmas Classic" to "Crusader New Years Invitational," Salem Academy's 5th annual holiday tournament continues to emerge as Oregon's premier small-school holiday basketball tournament. For the girls' bracket, Salem Academy AD and boys basketball coach Pete Potloff started with last year's 2A finalists, then added six 3A schools, including three Top Ten teams in the latest 3A coaches poll. The tournament wastes no time getting 2009 off to a roaring start as 3A #1 Santiam Christian faces 3A #9 Valley Catholic at 9:00 am on New Years day. The next girls' games features 2A #1 Portland Christian against 3A #3 and defending 3A champs Rainier. Also in the eight-school field are 3A Umatilla vs. 3A Cascade Christian and finally, 3A Willamina vs. tournament host and defending 2A champion Salem Academy. The 2009 SAC tourney features sixteen returning players who earned all-league honors last season, including seven all-state selections. Toss in the reigning 3A and 2A coaches-of-the-year, and there will not be a better 3-day period of 3A/2A girls basketball until March.
