2018 Premature Playoff Predictions, Week 4

It's time for another season of Premature Playoff Predictions. Much has changed about Oregon high school football in the past year, but I got my spreadsheets adjusted, and (assuming I didn't make any typos) I'm ready to start guessing at what will happen.   Game predictions are based on the Freeman rankings...

New Year = New Look for OPS

Just like athletes all over the state, OPS has been busy this summer with the hope of being even better for the upcoming school year.

One of the changes you'll see is a new look for the website.  Don't worry - everything is still here - just organized a little differently with a few new features.

The navigation menu(s) are now located horizontally at the top of the website.  The "main" navigation bar will appear on all pages and provide direct access to stories and links for sports that are "in-season".  Off-season sports are grouped into their Fall/Winter/Spring groupings.  All user functions are now located under the "Login" drop-down.

Once you have navigated to a specific sport, you will see an additional menu show up somewhere below the "main" navigation bar.  This menu will provide direct links to the current season's schedules, standings, ratings, etc.  Under the sport drop-down menu, you will see the same groupings for all historical seasons in which we have maintained records.

It's still preseason, though, so we may have a few kinks to work out of the system.  If you find anything that isn't working right or needs a little work, drop us a note.

Love it?  Hate it?  Tell us what you think.  We can only improve with feedback from our "coaches" - all of you!  As always, let This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. know if you have any questions.

Server Migration Complete

Growing pains had been affecting the site again during the past school year and I decided to upgrade our web hosting service (again...).  Gone are the days of shared hosting - the site needs a server all to itself now.  Hopefully it'll have some breathing room now.  The new server is now located in the Portland area (no more internet pages being served up from the Midwest or East Coast).  A big shout out to Matt Yaskovic (one of Dewey's boys) over at Infinity Internet for contacting me a while back and letting me know about their services.  We should now gain the speed benefits of having a server located in the area as well as having a server all to ourselves.  In the meantime, if you experience any problems with the site or find features that aren't working, please let me know.

Our Sincere Apologies (we're back now)

I almost don't know where to begin on this subject.  As most of you know, we've had some, er, difficulties over the past week here at OregonPrepSports.net.  We want to apologize to all of you and give you an idea of what happened and perhaps what is in store for us here.

Forums are Here ... for Now

OregonPrepSports.net now has forums for you to discuss high school sports in this great state of Oregon to your heart's content.  We're giving this a try, based on the numerous requests we've received to add this feature.  If things start getting ugly, we'll terminate this feature, so be sure to behave yourselves!  The forums are not moderated, but we will be reading and monitoring posts.  Please be respectful and let's keep the discussions lively, yet reasonable.  The forums can be reached here.

BCS Ratings are Here!

Some of you have been asking when the BCS ratings will be published for this year.  Well, they've finally been updated and posted on the site!

Latest Additions

If you click on a link to a sport (using the menu on the left side of the site), you will see two new links displayed.  One is for 2006 Ratings and the other is for Missing Scores.  Here is a brief summary of these new features.

Selecting Missing Scores will bring up a list of games that have been added to the site that were scheduled to have taken place in the past (including the current day's games) that either have no result posted or only the winning team has been posted (no score).  If you have information on these games, we would appreciate any help in posting the results to the site.   If the game has been cancelled or rescheduled, you can visit that school's schedule page and update the date/time or mark the "cancelled" field to indicate that the game will not be played.

Selecting 2006 Ratings will bring up a table that allows you to choose a classification and a rating to use to sort the teams.  A grid will then be displayed that shows a list of teams for that class and various stats and ratings information.  For more information on the computer ratings, I recommend that you visit the FAQ for that rating, which can be found on the ratings page or in the FAQ section of the site.  Please do not reproduce or publish the Colley ratings information without the consent of Mr. Colley himself.

The computer ratings should not be used as a definitive measure of a team's quality.  They are just formulas that try to gauge how well a team has performed when compared to its peers.  A matchup between two teams with a similar rating is likely to be a hard-fought battle, but that may not be the case.  These ratings do not factor in injuries, weather conditions, or any number of factors that may explain a team's past performance.  They are only provided as a guide to indicate which teams appear to be strong, those that appear in the middle, and those that appear to be weaker.

As always, if you have any suggestions for improvements to the site or new features you would like to see added, please let me know.  I am currently working on implementing a drop-down menu system for the site to help with navigation.

Site Improvements Implemented

I apologize for the slowness of the site and getting pages to load for the last few days.  I finally gave up on my old web hosting provider and moved to a new host.  This was the cause for the site to go down this morning and early afternoon.  All data has been migrated over to the new servers, however, and performance should be greatly improved.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions for the site!

Updated Google Maps Functionality

You may notice an updated feature to the OregonPrepSports.net site that was implemented this week.  There are Google Map locations for each of the Oregon High Schools which can be accessed from a few different places.  On the main menu, you will see a link to a page that lists several of the categories available (all schools, 6A schools, 5A schools, etc.).

There are also links to the official OSAA maps in a pdf format.  The Google Maps have the ability to "zoom-in" to a detailed street-level view that can assist in finding directions to unfamiliar schools that may be useful given the reclassification that took place this year.

In addition, you will see a link on each team's schedule page which will bring up a Google Map for that school.

Look for some additional groupings to become available this fall (league maps, field locations that are away from the high school, etc.) as well as the addition of schools outside of Oregon.

Preseason polls open for voting!

Starting this year, OregonPrepSports.net will begin publishing polls for the sports that we cover here on this site.  However, our polls will be different than other polls released in Oregon.  Our polls will be fan polls and voting is open to anyone who wishes to submit a ballot!

This year's polls will start with a preseason football poll that will be issued on Thursday, August 31st - in time for the kickoff of the week 0 games.  Voting for these polls has begun!

Polls for all sports have now started.  The links to the poll ballots can be found in the submenus below each sport's main menu link, located on the left-hand menu.  Polls will typically be open for balloting from Saturday through Monday afternoon with the results published late Monday or early Tuesday.
