Grant senior Piper Donaghu, center in blue, ran to a 39 second victory in the girls varsity race, running the 5K course in 19:00.

(Fernhill Park) - Washington cross country runners have had a leg up on Oregon runners during the annual Nike BorderClash post-season all-star invitational for the past decade. That might be changing as former Kamiakan High School runner Ahmed Ibrahim has transferred to Portland’s Reynolds High School for his senior season.

Ibrahim took control midway through Tuesday’s MHC/TRL Crossover cross country invitational at Fernhill Park and then cruised to victory in the 5K race by 17 seconds in 15:48. Although Fernhill’s course is flat and fast, it was an impressive early season performance in the heat that stamped Ibrahim as a state title contender.

“I like the course. It is a fast course,” said Ibrahim. “My plan was for the last mile to add more and more by the time I hit the hill.”

Ibrahim finished 11th in the Washington 3A boys finals last year while running for Kamiakan High School in Kennewick. Individual state title favorite Kyle Thompson of Central Catholic sat out the race, but West Linn’s sophomore brother duo of Roman and Grayson Ollar set a fast early pace with a 4:56 first mile.

“It was a really good race,” said Ibrahim. “I like having guys run with me, they support me.” Ibrahim is ready to race the best the state of Oregon has to offer.

“Definitely I want to see the fastest guys, so I can chase them,” said Ibrahim.

The Ollar brothers led through the first mile, but then Ibrahim took control and flew through the final mile, literally leaving the field in his dust. Roman Ollar finished second in 16:05 with David Douglas freshman Ahmed Muhumed next in 16:32. Grayson Ollar finished fourth in 16:34 and David Douglas sophomore Abdul Ahmed grabbed fifth in 16:37.

Central Catholic, the 6A boys state title favorite with seven returning runners, had its top five run as a pack, finishing in within two seconds of each other in 11th through 15th place (17:00-17:02) to finish in second place to West Linn for the team title. The Lions placed four runners in the top eight to outdistance the Rams 40-65 for the team title.

Grant senior Piper Donaghu, the state 800-meter champion on the track last spring, pulled away the second half to get the win in the 5K girls race in 19:00. The St. Mary’s duo of senior Paige Rice and sophomore Lacey Connor worked together to finish second and third behind Donaghu in 19:39, leading the Blues to the girls team title.

St. Mary’s had all five scoring runners in the top 10 to easily outdistance second place Lakeridge 30-97 for the team championship. David Douglas sophomore Kennedy Allen finished fourth in 20:03 while West Linn freshman Johanna Briscoe was fifth in 20:12.
