Let’s get right to this: the MWL Cup is a fake award I invented last year to give to the MWL school that won the most league titles in OSAA sanctioned athletic sports. Thurston won the inaugural 2006-07 MWL Cup, for example, winning 7 MWL championships in the 19 athletic events they participated with (I didn’t save the data, but I believe North Eugene was second with 5). So, with that explanation taken care of…

Thurston repeated in 2008-09, winning the 2nd annual MWL Cup in an even more dominating fashion than they did last year. In 2007-08, they won 11 MWL championships in 19 possible sports.

Thurston all but clinched the Cup all the way back in the Fall, winning the MWL crown in every sport they participated in: football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls cross country. With six titles already in the bag, they coasted the rest of the year, picking up another in the Winter with wrestling, and then ending the Spring session with four more: baseball, boys golf, and boys and girls track and field.

That’s outright domination.

Only three of Thurston’s nineteen sports didn’t finish in the top half (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) of the MWL: girls basketball (4th), girls swimming (5th), and boys tennis (4th). Given that a boys doubles team from Thurston made it to the 5A state quarterfinals, only 2 of the Colt’s 19 sports — girls basketball and girls swimming — didn’t participate in a postseason.

So congrats to Thurston High School, back-to-back MWL Cup award winners!

(Sorry -- there's not an actual trophy. But if your AD wants to print out a certificate saying that Thurston is the 2007-08 MWL Cup winner, I'll gladly endorse it with the ol' John Hancock. Because I know how much my signature would mean.)

For 2008-09, I'll do a SWC Cup. And we'll have a different scoring system -- 6 points to the school for finishing first in the league, 1 point for finishing last... etc. You get the idea. The school with the most points wins. Very scientific.
