Jim Fryback, head coach of Springfield High School's boys basketball team from 1981-93, and again from 2001-03, is returning to the school for a third stint.
Of Springfield's 13 total playoff appearences, 9 came under Fryback's watch. He helped the Millers return to the postseason after a 17 year hiatus in 1982, and returned again in 1983. After missing out in '84, Springfield qualified for the playoffs every year from 1985-89, and again in '91. He led the Millers to the MWL championship in 2003, in the final season of his second tenure. 9 of Fryback's 16 seasons as head coach resulted in playoff berths for Springfield. His best season came in 1988, when the Millers went 23-6, beat Clackamas and North Medford in the first two rounds of the state tournament, lost to Sunset in the 3rd, and then rebounded to beat Mountain View, Sandy, and Molalla to claim the consolation title. Springfield finished 9-14 last year, 2-13 in the MWL. Since reclassification, they've finished 5 games out of third place (the final playoff seed) in '07 and '08, and 7 games out last year. Fryback is quoted in the Register-Guard saying that he's very high on last season's freshmen class, so it'll be interesting to see how he'll go about rebuilding the Millers. Fryback replaces Dusty Auxier, who took over for Fryback after the '03 season. Thurston's Doug Piquette remains the dean of MWL coaches, serving at THS since 1998. Willamette's Doug Hedberg is now the second longest tenured coach in the league, coming to Will-Hi in 2006. Churchill's Kelly Bokn, Marshfield's Jesse Ainsworth, and North Eugene's Jeff Hays all recently completed their first seasons at their respective schools. |
