The OSAA has released the ’09 football postseason brackets. Here’s how I see it shaking down:
First Round:
IMC #4 @ MWL #3: Pendleton @ Churchill (for the third straight year in the 1st round!).
NWOC #3 @ MWC #3: Glencoe @ Crescent Valley.
MWC #4 @ IMC #3: South Albany @ Mountain View.
NWOC #4 @ SSC#3: Wilsonville @ Klamath Union.
Second Round:
NWOC #2 @ MWC #2: Hillsboro @ Corvallis. My preseason #6 and #5 teams.
IMC #4/MWL #3 @ SSC #1: Pendleton/Churchill @ Crater.
NWOC #3/MWC #3 @ IMC #1: Glencoe/Crescent Valley @ Hermiston. Potential rematch of last year’s controversial 30-27 Glencoe quarterfinal win over Hermiston.
MWL #2 @ PIL #1: Marshfield @ Jefferson. This would be the 4th meeting in two years for these two, the second year in a row they’ve met in the playoffs.
That’s the top half of the bracket. Hermiston (#3) and Corvallis (#5) are both in my top 5; that means 3 of my top 5 teams reside in the lower half of the bracket, setting up some huge games before ever reaching Reser Stadium:
SSC #2 @ NWOC #1: Ashland @ Sherwood.
MWC #4/IMC #3 @ MWL #1: South Albany/Mountain View @ Thurston.
NWOC #4/SSC #3 @ MWC #1: Wilsonville/Klamath Union @ West Albany.
PIL #2 @ IMC #2: Madison @ Bend.
And that’s the lower half. You’ll notice right off the bat that #1 Sherwood, #2 West Albany, and #4 Thurston (all rankings my own) are all in this bracket. This sets up a potential Sherwood/Thurston rematch, played again at Thurston High School. While I think Sherwood is the favorite to win state this year, I do think there are two or three schools that can match them athletically and in speed, and are capable of beating them if everything goes right: Thurston is one of those teams. Hell of a potential quarterfinal game. The winner, of course, has the potential to meet up with West Albany in the semifinals. And then play a state championship game the following week.
Brutal lower half of the bracket.
Anyway. The playoffs are a long way off, and they aren’t on the radar of most people just yet. This is just something to keep in the back of your mind.
