Written by DRH Tuesday, 28 October 2008 20:40    Hits: 249

The final week of the regular season may or may not determine much when it comes to the postseason -- both leagues have potential multi-team logjams and a cloudy tiebreaker system still to go, if things play out a certain way. Thurston and Marshfield square off for MWL supremacy, Sheldon and South Medford do the same in the SWC, and elimination games galore; it all comes down to this, and wouldn't you know? Looks like rain in the Willamette Valley this Friday

MWL

Marshfield Pirates (5-4, 3-1) @ #2 Thurston Colts (8-0, 4-0)

Since 2000
: Marshfield, 5-3. Streak: Thurston – 1. Last Meeting: Thurston 29, Marshfield 15 (2007)

Three great games in the SWC, three games I expect to turn into one-sided affairs in the MWL -- why so selfish, SWC? Sheldon and South Eugene renew their rivalry, playoff implications galore all over the state, and QB Tym Pearson tries to rebound after only throwing for six touchdowns last week. Welcome to the MWL/SWC blog, where sarcasm is very much in vogue.

MWL

#2 Thurston Colts (7-0, 3-0) @ #9 Churchill Lancers (6-2, 2-1)

Since 2000: 4-4, tie. Streak: Thurston – 1. Last Meeting: Thurston 31, Churchill 7 (2007)

We take a break from our regularly scheduled football broadcast to bring you a piece of basketball news from the great southern portion of our state:

Sheldon isn't undefeated in league play for the first time since 1912, there's a pair of MWL showdowns that will knock your socks off, Grants Pass tries to avoid a trap game in Roseburg, and Thurston may or may not win a game this Friday by triple digits. Welcome to the MWL/SWC Prediction blog, where we always win by triple digits.

MWL

North Eugene Highlanders (1-6, 0-2) @ #2 Thurston Colts (6-0, 2-0)

Sheldon's streak is O-VAH! Thurston wins their 18th straight over bitter rival Springfield! Churchill wins a huge showdown with Willamette! South Medford sits atop the SWC! And I enter exclamation point therapy! Read on!

MWL

Thurston 41, Springfield 0

QB Tym Pearson did it again – 233 yards passing and three touchdowns, 243 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Seriously – can you even do that on a PlayStation 3? The scary thing is that there were plenty of drops by Colt WRs all game long… his potential numbers are even more ridiculous.

Thurston turns the MWL Game of the Year into the potential MWL Rout of the Year, Sheldon extends their league winning streak to 57 games, South Eugene rips the hearts out of their fans yet again, and Churchill wins its fifth game in a row. Welcome to the MWL/SWC Blog, where nothing is as it seems and admission is free for children and senior citizens.

Remember when I said:

“Look for ball security to be a huge issue for both teams; this game, between two evenly matched programs, will be decided by turnovers. Neither team will blow the other out. Any windows of opportunity opened via a turnover could prove to be the difference maker.”

Yeah… forget about that.

A slightly different format this week gives you Springfield sitting atop the MWL, Thurston beating South Eugene in a thriller, Sheldon does something it hasn't done since 2000... and what's that I hear? Ah. Yes. Power rankings!

MWL

Springfield beat North Eugene 34-14 at NEHS, shaking off a sluggish first quarter to post a 34-7 lead at one point in the 4th quarter. The Millers are 4-0 for the first time in school history, and have their eyes on a MWL title for the first time since 1967.
