Another big MWL vs. SWC showdown, MWL play begins (Springfield @ North!), and a giant of a non-league 6A battle... welcome to Week Three.

MWL

Springfield Millers (3-0) @ North Eugene Highlanders (0-3)

Since 2000: Springfield 7-1. Streak: Springfield, 1. Last Meeting: Springfield 35, North Eugene 20 (2007)

The MWL takes two from the 6A ranks, the SWC wins and loses some in the 4th quarter, Marist wishes it hadn’t gone for two… and power rankings!

MWL

Springfield 34, Marist 33 -- OT

A wild game at Marist was capped when Sean McCauley sacked Spartan QB Logan Silver on a two-point attempt in overtime, giving Springfield its first 3-0 start since the Reagan Administration.

MWL

Dallas Dragons (0-2) @ Churchill Lancers (1-1)

Another week, another interesting MWL/MWC match-up. Dallas has struggle to start 2008, getting beat 42-14 at home to Springfield, and losing 55-0 on the road to Sherwood. Churchill, on the other hand, rebounded from a blowout loss to Sheldon in the opener to upend Summit last week. I was pleased with how QB Eric Knapp directed the offense vs. Summit -- throwing three touchdown passes and running for another.

Marist upends Marshfield for the second year in a row, Thurston scores its 107 point in its second game (they scored 187 all of last season), Sheldon puts up a bagel for the first time in... forever, and South Eugene opens up their season on a sour note. Plus... oh, yes, new power rankings.

MWL

Marist 27, Marshfield 25

Can’t wait for Marist to join the MWL in a couple of years – these Marshfield/Marist games are classics.

Well, I went 5-1 with my picks last week – tripped up along with North Eugene at Crescent Valley. Man, I didn’t see that coming. Kudos to those that did.

Though it’s the second week of action, it’s actually Week One, given that the first Friday of every season was dubbed Zero Week a number of years ago when only a few teams opted to play before the start of the “actual” season. So there you go. It’s technically Week One, though just about everybody has a game under their belt already. Go figure.

MWL

Churchill (0-1) @ Summit (0-1)

Churchill lost big to a great team, Summit lost by a little to a poor team.

Zero Week is in the books.

Thurston might have been able to put up 90 if the coaching staff was that cruel, Sheldon looks scary good, North Eugene flops, and more than one team finds a new quarterback. Plus... power rankings!

MWL

Thurston 60, Corvallis 13

You almost have to do a double take after looking at this score; Thurston didn’t play a 4A school, or a 5A also-ran – they hosted Corvallis, two years removed from winning the state championship. A first-class football program through and through.

But it didn’t matter Friday night, as Thurston QB Tym Pearson went 25/36 for 475 yards and 5 touchdowns, offering up an aerial assault that would have made even Alex Brink’s jaw hit the ground below him.

Zero Week is here!

I only predicted MWL games last year, but I finished 38-9 (81%) for my weekly picks, starting in Zero Week and finishing in the 5A Quarterfinals when Bend beat Willamette. Can I have another successful year? I’ll break up the 5A and 6A picks, if only because 5A is my bread and butter and I don’t want my 6A average bringing me down.

MWL

Sheldon @ Churchill

Last Meeting: 2007 (Sheldon 21, Churchill 0). Streak: Sheldon has won the last 7 by an average of 21.7 PPG. Churchill last beat Sheldon in 2000 by a score of 30-13.

Siddoway to Sheldon, Lokombo to Canada

Written by DRH Wednesday, 20 August 2008 10:46    Hits: 391

OL/DL Charles Siddoway, formerly of Marist, formerly (kind of) of South Eugene, will now be attending Sheldon High School for his senior season.

Siddoway, a 6-6, 305 pound linemen, rated four stars by Scout.com, transfered from Marist to South Eugene over the summer, but because two former Marist assistant coaches moved over to South Eugene as well, the OSAA declared that Siddoway would be ineligible on August 18, should Siddoway participate in South's first official fall practice. He did not participate in practice on the 18th, instead waiting for a ruling to the situation.

When one did not become available by Monday evening, he withdrew from South and enrolled at Sheldon. Ironically, his eligibility to play for South was granted Tuesday afternoon, but only after he had been accepted into Sheldon. Isn't the Eugene 4J open-enrollment policy fun?

If you read my old MWL/SWC blog over at WordPress, you know that I love Top 5 lists. So on this most holy of days – the first day of OSAA-sanctioned practice – I’ve put together a few of them to honor the occasion. Equipment has been issued; doubles start sooner rather than later; and we’re under two weeks until Zero Week.

Top 5… Players

MWL

1. QB Tym Pearson, Senior – Thurston. A dual-threat QB who emerged as a team leader as a sophomore, helping to salvage a playoff appearance in 2006 for a team that was absolutely devastated by injury. Arm strength, accuracy, speed…

2. OL/DL Aaron Boehland, Senior – Springfield. The best linemen to come out of the MWL in quite some time. Dominant since his sophomore year. In for a huge senior season blocking for Dusty Jarvis.

With two legitimate state championship contenders, the SWC looks downright explosive heading into 2008.

Defending state champion Sheldon returns a brilliant junior class that was instrumental in winning state last year, and chief challenger South Medford is absolutely stocked with playmakers on both sides of the ball. The two meet on Halloween, and expect nothing short of greatness. Since Sheldon’s first MWL championship of their dynasty era, consider their annual showdowns with their league’s predicted #2 challenger:
