Half of the MWL will have new roundball coaches come November. Here's the lowdown.

North Eugene

The biggest (and most shocking) coaching swap of the offseason comes from NE, where the uber-successfull Bill Wagner stepped down not long after the 5A state tournament. Wagner led NE to an 88-18 record the last 4 seasons, back-to-back MWL titles in 2006-07 and 2007-08, and the 2006-07 state championship.

Let’s get right to this: the MWL Cup is a fake award I invented last year to give to the MWL school that won the most league titles in OSAA sanctioned athletic sports. Thurston won the inaugural 2006-07 MWL Cup, for example, winning 7 MWL championships in the 19 athletic events they participated with (I didn’t save the data, but I believe North Eugene was second with 5). So, with that explanation taken care of…

One of the reasons covering HS athletics is a challenge is because player transfers don’t attract news. Most of the time, you don’t hear of a transfer until a kid shows up for school in early September. I mean, this isn’t college, where player transfers — like Oregon hoopster Drew Viney — commands the front page (unless you're Charles Siddoway, and you've run afoul of the OSAA). Thurston baseball coach Phil Dube had an interesting quote in the Guard earlier in the season saying that he didn’t know Darrell Hunter — a future MWL MVP and University of Oregon recruit coming off a great season with Churchill — was transfering back to Thurston until the first day of school, when Hunter showed up on his roll sheet in class. If the coaches don't always know about player movement... well, you can take a guess at how hard it is for the rest of us.

It’s the year of the running back in the MWL. There are no less than four backs in the league capable of taking home all kinds of honors – 1st team MWL RB, League Offensive Player of the Year, All State honors…

Willamette senior Craig Loper is the most established, going into his third year starting for the Wolverine varsity. Springfield senior Dusty Jarvis is the playmaker,

Until recently, I had always treated summer basketball like the month long NFL exhibition season in August. While I’m ultimately glad something is around to busy me from the monotony of watching my beloved Seattle Mariners drop further and further out of contention (or, this season, dropping further and further out of next-to-last-place), it’s hard to get too excited for games that don’t count.

Scout released their Northwest Top 100 a few days ago, listing their version of the top 100 recruits from the Great Northwest. Here’s a list of the Oregonian’s who made the list, with some comments on the SWC/MWL/Sky-Em players listed.
