Having already looked at the entire 4A scene, which included some 5A, 3A, & 2A teams, here are 10 games from the other classes that look to be very interesting, and worth while to watch.
Tualatin Timberwolves @ Beaverton Beavers. 2 of the Metro. area heavyweights square off. These “big program” games are just at a different level than most games in the state.
Canby Cougars @ Sprague Olympians. A little more “quaint” setting in the hills south of Salem, but this is also a heavyweight game.
Sunset Apollos @ South Eugene Axemen. #1 Axman, the head coach, has declared, on TV, this game a 1 game season for them. When you have back to back trips to Medford & Roseburg coming, AND THEN the Black Tornado is going to blow into town, that’s an interesting take on the first week.
Redmond Panthers @ Grants Pass Cavemen. Notice how neither coach Craig Ruecker, nor the rest of the Panthers, have complained about 5 trips across the Cascades, or a trip all the way to southern Oregon? Or the overall toughness of the schedule? Memo to the Salem-Keizer & Eugene school groups: Those that are up to the task don’t complain about it.
Wilsonville Wildcats @ Madras White Buffaloes. The TVL isn’t quite gone yet. This is one of the rivalries that redistricting hasn’t eliminated quite yet. Doug Sommer becomes only the 2nd. man to ever lead the Wildcats into a game. Lots of folks are interested in how this season goes. A trip to Madras is never a gimmie, and the Wildcats have seen a LOT of talent graduate after the last 2 years.
Lewiston (ID) Bengals @ Pendleton Bucaroos. 2 winning teams last year from the high & wide open country square off. Big games over there are a big event, not something taken for granted like they sometimes are in the populated Willamette Valley. If you are traveling thru, you should stop in for this one.
Thurston Colts @ Bend Lava Bears. Both teams were playoff teams last year, and probably will be again. This should be an interesting insight into both the IML & the MWL races. And evenings in Central Oregon this time of year are gorgeous, if the smoke isn’t too thick.
Redistricting meant a lot to 3A & 2A teams as far as league races, but not much for the non-conference games. There are so many cross class games, including vs. 4A as well, that an in-class game is the oddity. There are only 3 games with 3A vs. 3A in week 1, & 3 with 2A vs. 2A. However, 2 of the 3A games may well be among the best all weekend at any level, as they match perennial contenders.
Regis Rams @ Dayton Pirates. These schools have seen more of each other in various sports over the recent years than many league rivals have. And there is no more basic match up in Oregon football than Deweyball vs. Contra-Deweyball. This one is as good as it gets.
Bandon Tigers @ Santiam Christian Eagles. Both teams usually win most of their games. By rule, 1 will lose their opener, and the 3A crowd will take note of which one.
2A Central Linn Cobras @ Harrisburg Eagles. Next door neighbors, but not always active rivals. CL has gone from being a class larger than their neighbors to the same size to being a class smaller. But games between neighbors are always interesting all week leading up to the game. And very interesting the following Monday morning at the coffee shop.
And finally, if none of those 10 fit your plans, there is the Dufur 8-man classic, featuring 7 games & 14 teams in 2 days. There will be more players in uniform and playing games in Dufur than in any other high school stadium this weekend (jamborees do NOT count), including 6A schools. The fact that it takes 14 teams to do that just means a football lover COULD see more football between noon Friday & 10 PM Sat. without using Tivo than lots of dedicated fans will by Halloween! And, being 8-man football, they will probably have to take time out to replace burned out scoreboard lights a couple times. This is without a doubt the single most colorful football event in the state.
Not that any other game not mentioned isn’t worth it as well. Everyone features young men who have worked hard for the privilege of working hard some more.
