Eaton, Rupp Lead Former Oregon Preps at NationalsWritten by Andrew Millbrooke Tuesday, 28 June 2011 08:40 Hits: 675 Bend’s Ashton Eaton Wins 1st U.S. Decathlon Title
Portland’s Galen Rupp Wins 3rd-Straight 10K Title
(Eugene) – The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships just completed another magnificent run (June 23-26) at Hayward Field as a four-day record crowd of 40,351 fans watched both the Senior and Junior (19-and-under) National Championships. The top three in each event at Senior Nationals qualified for the World Athletic Championships, to be held in Daegu, South Korea in August, while the top two placers in the Junior Nationals qualified for the Pan-American Junior Athletic Championships next month in Miramar, Florida. Over 25 athletes who competed at Oregon high schools took part in the meet as well as one athlete who just finished middle school in Eugene. Former UO star and 3-time NCAA Champion, Ashton Eaton, from Mountain View High School in Bend was a convincing winner in the men’s decathlon, setting a personal record with 8,729 points, moving him to 5th all-time among American decathletes. His score also made Eaton the world leader in the decathlon for 2011. Interestingly enough, Eaton is only the 3rd highest scoring decathlete among former Oregon preps. Henley’s Dan O’Brien (8,891 points in 1992) and Glendale’s Tom Pappas (8,784 points in 2003) are still ahead of Eaton on the all-time U.S. list, and the 6th best mark belongs to Dave Johnson (8,727 points in 1992), who attended Crescent Valley High School for his senior year. So, four of the top six U.S. decathletes of all-time are former Oregon preps! Track Town, how about Decathlon State!! (Check out Eaton’s marks at the bottom of this article.) Former UO All-American and Central Catholic High star, Galen Rupp, garnered another gold medal for Oregon preps, running a scintillating 1:52.6 last 800 meters to win his third-straight national title over 10,000 meters in 28:38.17. Rupp came back a day later and held on for 3rd-place in the 5,000 meter final, running 13:25.52 to earn another berth on the national team. Former UO and Newberg HS star, Rachel Yurkovich, placed 2nd in the women’s javelin with a throw of 180-2, making sure that a female former Oregon prep would be represented on the national team heading to Daegu later this summer. Cyrus Hostetler, another former UO and Newberg HS star qualified for World’s with a 3rd-place showing in the javelin with a throw of 255’4. Hostetler still needs to get a qualifying mark over 270' if he intends to make the trip to South Korea. Hayward Fields Track and Fields DreamsWritten by Don Francis Wednesday, 18 May 2011 22:24 Hits: 1059 There is Fenway and Wrigley for baseball. There is Churchill Downs as the majestic venue for horses galloping around a track. Radio City Music Hall harbors the best for singing and kicking shapely legs high. For track and field there is no equal anywhere in the western hemisphere to equate what Hayward Field stands for. Knock on wood, it even looks like the weather gods may give us a rare glimpse of the star we spin about as Ryan Crouser tries to get his own 'spin on.' For us, the few 'track and field nerds' living in this soggy, damp and moldy state, this weekend is a respite to watch our states own stars. And there are some truly fascinating twists and turns. State records are there for the plunder and giddy sprinters and throwers will take natures favorable conidtions and the magical feeling of Hayward Field to put there own names in the record books. Lets just call this "Idiots Guide to the State Track and Field Meet as Penned By the Chief Idiot" Hayward Field Track's Picks, Pans, Kudo's and Menudo'sWritten by Don Francis Saturday, 21 May 2011 20:57 Hits: 1020 The weather gods were kind. No precipitation this year. Been awhile since we didn't see a day of rain or biting cold during at least one of the sessions. While in years past, we've had 'Year of the Distance Corp" for some reason, it seems like this was 'Year of the Sprinters." Call Barlow's Authur Delaney what you want but don't call him lazy. He never did break into the winners circle but he did account for 28 of Barlow's 51 points (Delaney and Ryan Crouser had 48 between them). Delaney had two seconds (100 and 200 meters) then grabbed two thirds (long jump and 400). Two 6A girls stood out for their yeomans work. McMinnville's junior Ashante Horsely kept busy herself. Second in the Long Jump; First in the 400 and two third place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes gave her exclusive membership in the 30 point club. Meanwhile, Gresham's super soph Haley Crouser won the javelin, finished second in the shot, grabbed a third in the High Hurdles (she did a great job of letting the race 'come to her' I thought) and a fourth in the Long Jump for 29 points. Make her a favorite in both Shot and Javelin next year easily. Springfields Daphne Chambers was another workhorse. Weird collection of events, she won the 100HH, finished third in the 300IH, fourth in the 100M Dash and fifth in the shot for 25 points. From OSAA State Track and Field*Friday RecapsWritten by Don Francis Friday, 20 May 2011 10:22 Hits: 1280 A Random Kibbles and Bits as we glide through a pretty darn nice Friday at Eugene's Hayward Field. Just some quick bits to recap the action. Without the CipoleBabble. Girls 6A Javelin off the bat. Gresham's Haley Crouser has thrown 161' to lead all thowers going into the final. Kaylie VanLoo from Glencoe finally pops a PR with 154'9 but falls an inch short to Jesuit's Liz Brenner for second. Crouser ups her toss to 169'7 to ieave the field behind. No record today and Rachel Yurkovich's state record is safe for another year. OSAA 4A-6A Track and Field-Saturday ShowdownsWritten by Don Francis Saturday, 21 May 2011 09:10 Hits: 1331 The Major Cast of Characters have advanced into Saturdays finals. The team races still look largely in place and looming is the anticipated 6A Boys sprints. Aloha's Thomas Tyner looks hard to beat in the 100 and in the 200, Tyner will battle Barlow's Aurthur Delaney who needs to start racking points in the 100, 200 and 400 if Barlow is to grab the team title. Oh, and he's long jumping. Busy day ahead for Aurthur. Don't count out Crater's Jack Galpin who by past 'track record' has shown there is no better venue to grab the spotlight than the last day of a state track meet. He blistered the 200 qualifying with a 21.20 meet record. First a rundown on this mornings field event final before running events start at 1pm. Scroll on down to find out whats going on. Weather looks like an overcast day with a chance of showers and sunbreaks. Still it rates out as one of the best days this year. From Oregon Prep to Three-Time NCAA ChampionWritten by Andrew Millbrooke Tuesday, 15 June 2010 14:55 Hits: 1703 Eaton Leads 13 Former Oregon Preps at NCAA Meet
(Eugene) – Oregon’s Ashton Eaton from Mountain View High School in Bend provided the fireworks at a spectacular NCAA Championships, held at Hayward Field from June 9th-12th, setting a new NCAA meet and Oregon school record in winning his third-straight NCAA Decathlon title with the second highest total ever by a collegian, 8,457 points. Eaton ran the 400 meters in NCAA record time (46.28) for a decathlon, while also running 10.37 for 100m, 13.68 for the 110 HH, and long jumping 25-11. He set another NCAA record for first day total, 4,500 points. Eaton was by far the biggest star performer among former Oregon preps competing at the four day meet, but no less than a dozen other former Oregon high school athletes competed against the top 24 in each event nationally. 2010 State Track and Field ChampionshipsWritten by Andrew Millbrooke Saturday, 29 May 2010 21:45 Hits: 2746 Team Champions
4A Girls – Philomath 87.5 points 4A Boys – Sweet Home 58 points
5A Girls – Summit 65 points 5A Boys – Crater 86 points
6A Girls – Jesuit 76 points 6A Boys – Tigard 50 points
(Eugene) – The sky opened up and the sun came out as Hayward Field produced another magical day for many of the state’s top prep track and field athletes as the combined 4A, 5A, and 6A State Championships wrapped up on Saturday. Tigard took the 6A boys title by running away from the field by over two seconds in the day’s last event, the 4x400 relay, to pick up 10 points and nip Barlow by one point, 50-49, for the team title. Anything less than a win and the Tigers would have settled for second place.
Summit’s Kellie Schueler (below, winning the 400 meters) fought gamely through a strained hamstring to complete her goal of becoming a 16-time state champion, joining Yoncalla’s Maranda Brownson as the only athletes in state history to accomplish the feat.
Dakotah Keys won four events, leading Sweet Home to it's third straight team title. Gresham’s Sam Crouser (below, winning javelin) won all three throwing events (Shot Put, Discus, Javelin), becoming just the second thrower ever to win all three events at the highest classification level. “I didn’t throw as far as I wanted to,” Sam said. “But, winning the triple-crown is a big achievement.” Crouser has committed to Oregon and is well aware of the aura of Hayward Field and it’s fans. “You don’t see this type of atmosphere anywere else,” Crouser said. “The claps that the fans get going are great!”
Full Story and More Pictures below... Hayward Field Promises Magic This WeekendWritten by Don Francis Wednesday, 26 May 2010 22:13 Hits: 1550 Zeus and his zany cast of gods atop Mount Hood no doubt drew up the weather for last week under the premise that it was a test of 'only the best of the best may compete on the treasured oval that is Track and Field's equivalent of the "Field of Dreams." For the most part, Oregon high school thinclads were like the US Postal Service at their respective district qualifiers, for they all delivered through the wind and the hail and the rain. Now those same gods will stand down this weekend and gather in the East Grandstand to revel and cheer the likes of Kellie Scheuler, Drew Jordan, Sam Crouser and Annamarie Maag. The weather should be more favorable to producing some great marks and also setting the table for many a teams chances at a title being decided by the last relay. Many an athlete will be making their last lap as a high schooler around Hayward Field with the OSAA State Track and Field gearing up for this Friday and Saturday. Not a bad exit to make. Sherwood Girls and St Helens Boys Capture NWOC Track TitlesWritten by Don Francis Sunday, 23 May 2010 11:07 Hits: 1749 Sherwoods Girls Track team rode the "Perfect Storm" to surge past pre-meet favorites Glencoe while St. Helens paddled past Wilsonville to the boys title. Under weather conditions that looked like it belonged on "Deadliest Catch' both Wednesday and Friday, the monsoonal rains and howling winds couldn't stop the best athletes from putting in some stellar performances. Track and Field PreviewWritten by Andrew Millbrooke Wednesday, 07 April 2010 20:34 Hits: 3155 2010 Track and Field
Although the season is underway and many great marks have been already been posted, I’ve finally gotten around to posting a preview article for the upcoming season. Many talented athletes return at all levels of competition (6A-1A) on both the boys and girls sides. The University of Oregon continues to claim most of the talented in-state track and field standouts. Oregon bound Dakotah Keys of Sweet Home is the best multi-event performer in state history. The Crouser cousins, Oregon bound Sam and Ryan a junior, from the Mt. Hood Conference are re-writing the record books in the boys throwing events. Oregon bound Cole Watson, from Rogue River, ran the 800 in 1:52.48 last season and has run the 3,000 in 8:48.30 this year. Summitt’s Kellie Scheuler, headed to Stanford, is chasing down a legend as the second fastest girl in state history and will attempt a historic 100-200-400-800 quad at the state meet this year. Scheuler is trying to become the second girl to win 16 state titles (Yoncalla sprinter Maranda Brownson). Jesuit junior Annamarie Maag, on her way to becoming one of the most decorated female distance runners ever, is the defending state champion at both 1500 (4:33.17) and 3,000 (9:59.28).
