Koehnkes Led Rams to 3 Titles Regis has turned to the father and son team of Jeff and Jason Koehnke to coach the Rams' girls' baksetball team, replacing Jon Heuberger. The Koehnkes, who spent the last two hoops seasons coaching the youth basketball team that Jeff's daughter Whitney has played on, led the Rams' boys to three straight state 2A titles in the 2003, 2004, and 2005 seasons. |

Every student athlete dreams of winning a State Championship just once, oh just once, during their 4 year High School career. Those who have experienced the emotional triumph and even moreso, those who haven't, can understand and truly appreciate the extraordinary chain of events that must occur in order to win a state championship. But....every once in a blue moon, a gifted athlete emerges and separates herself/himself from the pack while crushing opponents in individual and team sports. Even more rare, is the athlete that can produce state championship caliber athleticism in 3 different seasonal sports. While most 5A & 6A athletes are being forced to have to choose a single sport to play, the 1A-4A athletes have the opportunity to play a different sport each season and excel if the talent is there. |

As Rip Torn said to a group of hand picked recruits in "Men In Black," "You're here because you're the best of the best," it would be easy to picture Nike's Mary Thompson echoing the same lament to a select group in the sequel "Girls in Swoosh." Afterall, it was a top secret installation holding a tryout for those who can do freakish things others dare dream of. It was a collection of "Who's Who in Women's Basketball" all compiled in Nike's Bo Jackson Gym to witness the 2008 Girls Skills Academy which had attracted the nations top twenty high school girls players. To put it in perspective, Oregon City's legendary coach Brad Smith came over and gushed "Did you see me on the clock? I was solid!" Brad was proud to be tabbed as the 'clock boy' and he did a great job. Everybody who could sneak in was there to see the evolution of girls basketball. Her name is Brittney Griner. |

One of my favorite events in the world outside high school sports and college football is about to unfold in what is the greatest track and field venue in the world. Hayward Field is the trackophiles true "Field of Dreams' not just nationally but worldwide. With action starting up this Friday, I thought it might be fun to give a shout out to a few athletes that will be fun to follow and cheer on over the next ten days. Many with local ties and some with stories on how they got to Eugene in the first place you can't help but pull for them.
ANDREW WHEATING-One of the best stories to come around in a while. Not even a high school runner but a soccer player who leaves Vermont and comes to University of Oregon. Running competitively for just a couple of years, finishes second in the NCAA 800 meters last month with a 1:45.32 which gives him the 5th best time of the field. This Duck has just scratched the surface of his potential and has track enthusiasts buzzing. He has 'declared for both the 800 and 1500 meter races. The 800 will be run this coming weekend and the 1500 is the last event that closes the trials on July 6th. So he will get a break and can attempt to make the team in the 1500 Meters if he doesn't get into the 800. (Top three finishers get to go if they meet the Olympic "A" Standard). By the time he's done at U of O he could be one of the all-time greats. He has a blistering kick and is a blast to watch coming down the home stretch where he's been mowing down runners.

The South has risen again thanks to Thunder and Lightning. Behind the one-two punch of Mountain View's Ash Gibson and West Salem's Jordan Bishop, the South broke a three game losing streak to take out the North on an evening perfect for football at PGE Park.
Make no mistake, Jordan Bishop is a PAC-10 wide receiver plain and simple. Making two acrobatic leaping touchdown catches with Jesuit's Raphiel Lambert draped on him, he walked out with the game MVP Award and deservedly so. I'm not sure Mike Riley knows how good he's going to have it and the Duck's who whined about not landing a receiver clearly missed the boat not going after Bishop who finished 2nd in both the High Jump and 400 meters at the State Track Meet and won a state title in the Long Jump just a few weeks back. Bishop is a big receiver with great hands and leaping ability.

Mohawk’s Brody Wilkins Leads Strong West Effort
La Grande- It’s been six months since the end of the 2007 football season, and Brody Wilkins and his Mohawk teammates haven’t missed a beat. Wilkins threw two touchdown passes and ended an East threat with an interception in the end zone during the West’s 28-2 win in the 19th annual Oregon 8-Man All Star Football Game at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

2A North Completes Sweep The 2A North completed a sweep of the South with another dominating second half, taking a 34 point, 94-60 win Saturday at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. The North led 40-33 at the half, and again outshot and outrebounded the South to pull away.
North Douglas' Dustin Andes led the way with 17 points, and Oakland's Andrew Young added 15 more for the North. North Douglas' Tyler Vancil also had a double double, with 13 rebounds and 11 points. Lakeview's Jordan Kiely led the South with 14 points.
3A South Tops Century Mark Again
The 3A South again controlled the game, cruising to a 101-83 win. A huge advantage at the free throw line, mostly in the second half, where the South converted 20 of 25 free throws, compared to 4 of 8 by the North, contributed heavily to the outcome.
The South was led by Bryce Doherty of Riverside and Jasem Dulaney of Creswell, both of whom had 19 points. Meanwhile, Friday's top scorer, Brody McGowan of Harrisburg, added a double double, with 18 points and a game high 13 rebounds.
Conrad Ritchie of Clatskanie led all scorers with 26 points, but unlike the more balanced South, the North's next highest point total was 12 by Colton's Nick Connor.
4A South Turns Tables on North
The 4A South got 28 points from David Berney of Marist to control the majority of the second game of the series, and gain a split. Tarrance Glynn of Molalla again led the South with top numbers of 22 points and 8 rebounds.
The South prevailed despite a sizable advantage at the line for the North, who hit 22 of 28 free throws, compared to 10 of 12 for the South. However, relatively cold shooting from the floor, especially in the first half, when the South outshot the North 61 % to 41%, saw the South steadily stretch the lead.
The South bench also had a big advantage, producing 57 points compared to 36 for the North. The North did make a 22-10 run at the end of the game, but the margin had become too large to overcome.
5A South Pulls Out Overtime Win
Tied at 94 at the end of 40 minutes, the South outscored the North 16-12 in overtime to complete a hard fought weekend sweep of the South. The highly competitive game saw 7 ties and 6 lead changes.
Thurston's Drew Wiley poured in 31 points for the South, outdistancing the 27 points the North's Anthony Golden of Madison managed. One of the key differentials was Wiley's 10 of 11 mark at the free throw line, compared to Golden's North leading 2 for 2.
In all, the South sank 30 of 39 from the line, compared to only 11 of 23 by the North. The North erased Friday's deficit on the boards, especially due to a 24-12 advantage on the offensive end, but it wasn't quite enough to overcome their free throw shooting shortcomings.
6A South Scores Split with North
The 6A South won a shootout over the North 105-99, overcoming a 50-49 halftime North lead, to achieve a split to close this year's OACA All-Star Series Saturday night. Twelve ties and nine lead changes highlighted a game that never saw more than a 9 point margin.
"North" players led the South in scoring, as North Salem's Scott Starkey led all scorers with 22 for the South, and North Medford's Danny Berger was the shooting star of the game, hiting
9 of 11 shots, including 3 of 4 from 3 point range, for 21 more points for
the South. Meanwhile, McMinnville's Kyle Long led the "true" North with 21 points, while Barlow's Seiji Blume led everyone on the boards, with 9 for the North.
In the close game, a +6 advantage in steals by the South translated into a +9 advantage in points off turnovers, and the difference in the game.

Grant High School played host to one of the finest Boy AAU basketball tournaments of the season as teams as far away as Georgia showed up to participate in the Rose City Showcase, a fundraiser hosted by Courtside Entertainment. Even though none of the three Oregon teams will battle for the title in the U17 "Big Dogs" title game on Sunday, it was apparant that the talent pipeline is still 'rosy' for the host state. |
