Skyhakws Dominate Marching Band Event

The Southridge Skyhawks marching band dominated the OSU Band Competition Saturday, posting the best score in qualifying, and four of five section awards as well as an easy win in the evening's final competition.

Twenty top Oregon marching bands, as well as a couple of top Washington units, competed Saturday in the competition, hosted by the Oregon State University Beaver Marching Band.

(Updated with photos of all 15 bands from the finals of the competition.)

The OSU Band, oldest in the Pac-10, and in their 118th. year, also performed, giving prospective recruits from the high school bands a close-up look at what they can look forward to at the next level.

Marching bands are classified for competition based on the size of the band, and without regard to school size. With points awarded in eight areas, Southridge posted a 91.7 (of a possible 100) in the daytime qualifying session, which captured the Open (largest) class over Skyview of Vancouver, Washington, who posted an 86.3.

West Salem captured the AA (middle sized) class over South Salem, 84.8 to 82.35. Sprague outpointed Hillsboro 75.75 to 73.15 to claim the A (smallest) band class.

Southridge also claimed the overall awards for General Effect, Visual Effect, Musical Effect, and Auxillary (twirlers, flags, and other non-musical performers). West Salem claimed the overal Percussion award, and claimed fourth overall, with an 84.15 in the evening session. (Afternoon scores are thrown out after qualifying, as all bands start even in the finals.)

Skyview again finished second in the finals, trailing Southridge 92.5 to 88.85. Grants Pass picked up third with an 87.05.
