A little bit of this and that from the Oregon high school sports scene.
BASKETBALL
Everybody In The State Was There
North Eugene beat arch-rival South Eugene 63-62 before a crowd of 9,668 paying fans at Mac Court - February 19, 1963, laying claim to the largest regular season turnout in Oregon prep history. North Eugene was 15-1 and South carried a 13-3 mark into the big game, including a victory over the Highlanders earlier in the month.
The large crowd was fueled by North’s number one rating in the state and South holding down the number two spot in the ratings. Mel Krause’s northside outfit would suffer only the loss at the hands of the Axemen enroute to a 25-1 overall record, and their first state championship. Bill Thomas led the winners with a game-high 29 points.
What makes this attendance mark even harder to believe, is that the game was held on a Tuesday night.
Next in line on the big crowd list is the Jefferson-Benson game of February 23, 1972. Held at the Memorial Coliseum, with 7,858 fans looking on, Jefferson squeaked out a two point win, 78-76, over the Techsters.
A Dozen From 10-Feet
It was less than a year ago when the Oregon prep record was set for the number of dunks in a single-contest. With Terrence Jones doing most of the damage, Jefferson High School was reported to have slammed home a dozen shots via the dunk. This came in a playoff game with the South Albany High School Rebels in which the Demos would win 122-78. March 6, 2010
Two Oregon Preps Hit For 51
Shoni Schimmel’s school scoring record at Franklin High School stood for just over a year until little sister Jude Schimmel got a hold of it. Last Tuesday (December 28, 2010) at the Century Tournament, Jude poured in 51 points in a losing cause as the host team defeated the Quakers 73-68.
Almost one year ago, Jude’s older sister, Shoni, scored a Franklin school record 48 points in a 91-52 victory over Canby. The younger Schimmel hit on 21-of-40 from the field and 5-of-11 from the line - that includes 4-of-10 from beyond the arch. She also was credited with 12 rebounds.
On the boys side - David Mokan of Open Door Christian, located in Troutdale, scored 51 points in a 103-77 win over Triangle Lake High School on December 27, 2010, in the first round of the Perrydale Tournament. Mokan has been there before. Last year as a junior he scored 52 in a 83-70 win over the Portland Waldorf School.
You Did Not Know This About Wilt!
Wilt Chamberlain, a career .511 free throw shooter during his 13 years in the NBA could step up and put them down when he really wanted to make a point.
On March 2, 1962 in Hersey, Pa., “The Big Dipper” would abuse the New York Knicks, by scoring his now famous 100 points, leading his Philadelphia Warriors to a 169-147 rout of the Knicks. Chamberlain was 36-of-63 from the floor and had his best night ever from the line, dropping in 28-of-32 free throws (.875).
While a high schooler at Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School (February 17, 1955) he hit on 18-of-26 from the charity stripe in a 123-21 victory over Roxborough. Wilt connected on 36-of-41 field goals to cash in on 90 points - his prep high.
