Finals Day at 4A/5A/6A Track and FieldWritten by Don Francis Saturday, 23 May 2009 09:07 Hits: 628 Here we are on Saturday morning at its finals time. No more of those sissy pre-lims. Today all the races are big boy and big girl stuff! As expected Moriah Roberge of Marshfield is 'on form' in the girls pole vault with a big clearance at 11'9 on her first jump. Alyssa Hasslen of McMinville is getting ready for her first thow in the shot. Sunny, and still cool but looks like a fantastic day with some fast times on this 'fastest' of tracks. Roberge clears 12' on her second jump and has the 5A State Meet Record. Promisng sophomore Sophie Gutermuth of Bend finishes second with a PR at 11'9 and her sister Nina takes third. Roberge clears 12'6! SS is smiling, you just know it. ROBERGE CLEARS 12'9.....sorry, I'm getting verklempt. Must be all that pollen in the air making me' eyes water. 4A/5A/6A First Day Track and FieldWritten by Don Francis Friday, 22 May 2009 09:56 Hits: 365 We'll take you through the first day of Oregon State Track and Field coverage in Eugene in a random blathering style of coverage. The weather is ideal and the athletes and fans have silly grins on their faces. Especially those that were here on Friday last year when it was cold and wet. The vaulting conditions are ideal for the 6A boys with just a light breeze. Two skycranes tower just in back of Hayward putting the pieces into place what will be the Ducks new arena. Kristin Oenning of Sherwood clears 4'11 on her first attempt, Elliott Jantzer is leading in the 4A 3000 in the gun lap and JJ Julifs and Jared Hippler is over 16 feet in the vault. Life is good. Jantzer completes the first step of his 'triple crown' winning the Boys 4A 3000 in a time of 8:43. Jared Hippler of Oregon City gets over 16'3 with plenty to spare on his first attempt. Lexi Ross of Lakeridge wraps up her great season by winning the girls 6A javelin with a toss of 142'3. "Stan the Man and the Summiteers"... State Track is HereWritten by Don Francis Wednesday, 20 May 2009 14:43 Hits: 241 He rode in from “The Rock” on a gigantic tsunami that washed thousands of Hawaiian high school students into the colleges of Oregon in the late 1950’s. This week, at the Oregon High School State Track and Field Meet in Hayward Field, so many of us will dearly miss the biggest smile that ever graced the meet. The smile just a few rows up facing the pole vault pit in the East Grandstand belonging to Stan Solomon. A Tale of Two Track MeetsWritten by Don Francis Saturday, 16 May 2009 11:50 Hits: 368 First and foremost, let the record show I'm the ultimate 'track geek." There are those folks who pour over the business page to check on what stocks did the previous day and there are those such as myself who may have a genetic defect and instead pour over the previous day's track and field results gleening for a 'wow, she ran a 2:28 800!" Regardless, this is the time of season when the thinclads in Oregon High School track and field go out to bid for the coveted "Willie Wonka I've Got a Golden Ticket" for Hayward Field next week. Most larger schools held their district meets on Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday was the pits and Friday was nirvana. For Ashley Schnapp and Olivia Campbell, they should have enjoyed pole vault nirvana but instead were faced with the pits.
"The Coach's Bullseye"Written by Don Francis Tuesday, 05 May 2009 13:28 Hits: 531 Some years it seems the 'teacher' makes the front page news more often in regards to 'abnormal' behavior and there becomes a public uproar to more closely monitor these monsters who rule our childrens classroom. From Nabakov's "Lolita" to Mary Kay Letournea, the public eats these scandals up like a fat person relishes the All-You-Can-Eat buffet. In Oregon, it seems the 'coach' has pulled into a slight lead given the upheaval that seemed to rock the ranks of so many programs. Most recently Joe Williamson, the highly successful girls basketball coach from Corvallis, was informed his one year contract would not be renewed. Also garnering a fair amount of press coverage was Lincoln's David Adelman and Lake Oswego's swim coach Don King, Crescent Valley's Kodi Waite and Crater's Greg Haga. All very respected and good coaches who crashed and burned in different varying degrees. The list of familiar names this school calendar year is long but these are just a few who found themselves in the news for reasons other than 'the big win.' If we learned anything over the past season, its that the information highway moves a helluva lot quicker than when I was running around in knee high tube socks, big hair (man, wish I still had that) and a penchant to sit on the bench and cheer on my teammates. Plus the "Uber-parent' was a mythical creature who lived on a magical island with Unicorns. In other words, they didn't exist. OSAA Emergency Mandate Enforces Athletic EqualityWritten by Cipole Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:52 Hits: 766 Amid the discussion to realign the conferences, the Oregon School Athletic Association has moved quickly to adopt the Harrison Bergeron Doctrine in an Emergency Session to promote and enforce an even greater equality within the ranks of the student athlete in high school sports. This bold and sweeping move was recently adopted in states such as New Hampshire, Minnesota and Vermont. Simply stated, the Bergeron Doctrine will eliminate inequality that runs rampant in high school sports. The doctrine is named after Harrison Bergeron, who, though immensely talented with superior skills to most anyone of his generation, made the ultimate sacrifice to illuminate what a wonderful world it would be if all things are equal. 2009 McDonald's All American Games NomineesWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Friday, 06 February 2009 11:26 Hits: 1154 The 2009 nominees for the McDonald's All-American game have been announced. This year, 26 boys and 19 girls from Oregon were honored.
Wilsonville Subdues Sherwood 52-41Written by Don Francis Saturday, 31 January 2009 13:11 Hits: 201 Wilsonville Coach Cindy Anderson's parents enjoy the arts and since it was a special occasion their daughter wrote a little play for them and got her team to play the different acting roles. The first half they played a down-trodden team at the brink of playoff elimination. Since Anderson was the author of this little four act play, for her parents it was a happy ending with all the suspense and drama one comes to expect from a WillyWood contest regardless if its football, basketball or even tiddlywinks. Call it a case of the 'oops' but Sherwood continues to suffer from some dastardly viral symptoms that hit the Bowmen for eight minutes stretches. Always striking in that quarter just before or after halftime, the malady consists of inability to make simple passes, erratic decision making, steep drop in field goal percentage and coaching irratability. On Tuesday, they watched Glencoe swamp them in a 15-3 second quarter and again on Friday, Wilsonville turned the tables on a Sherwood 25-19 halftime lead with a 15-5 run in the third quarter en route to a 52-41 win that turned the race for runner-up in the NWOC into a four team race. Just last Friday Sherwood and Hiillsboro both sat 6-0 before Sherwood experienced their first case of the 'oops' while watching a 10 point go 'poof' in the third quarter against Hilhi. Now Liberty, Wilsonville and Sherwood all sit at 6-3 and Glencoe is just a game back. What a difference a week can make.
"Ladies....Start Your Dribble!"Written by Cipole Thursday, 22 January 2009 17:40 Hits: 248 By now the Girls High School 5A and 6A conference showdowns have started to seperate the pack where contenders have slowly weeded out the pretenders. There are some top echelon teams you can almost take a pen and write them straight into an opening round at the Chiles Center come March. However you'll need a pencil for your bracketology in many of the conferences where a pack of teams are vying for a nice seed to get them to The Big Dance even though a #1 spot looks bleak. Take the top bracket of the 6A where the #2 PIL; a #2 Mt Hood; a #4 Southwest and a #3 Three Rivers team will do a four team tourney to see who advances. If you're on a team in any of those conferences, you may be eyeballing that bracket and think 'hmmm, there are far worse sitch's to be in. I like our shot to advance if we land in that pool!" Meanwhile, if you scroll your finger down a few you'll see the #3 Metro, the #2 Southwest Conference, the #4 Three Rivers and undoubtedly Central Catholic all jumbled in a dogfight. Then at the bottom resides what looks like either Jesuit or Southridge traveling to Oregon City for a right to get to Chiles. "Bummer dude" is all I can say. Lets roll through some of the finer 5A and 6A Friday Night Fights that may start to clear or muddy the waters even further... Page 2 of 6 «StartPrev123456NextEnd» |
