Oregon High School SportsHayward Athletes Much Hotter Than WeatherWritten by Don Francis Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:58 Hits: 294 Those silly weather prognosticators around the state were predicting warm and sunny skies to open the Oregon State Track and Field Championships in storied Hayward Field and even last Sunday found me smiling and envisioning everyone in shorts and tee-shirts and flip flops to celebrate the states best preforming as 'true thinclads.' Fast forward...The Oregon State Track and Field State Championships opened today in Eugene at Hayward Field and it was business as usual as a good turnout showed up all adorned in earmuffs, big sweatshirts and blankets as a biting chill and threatening clouds proved the local meteorologists are nothing more than media gamblers who know how to bluff a TV audience. From the look of it, the OSAA shatterred the previous record of 892 sweatshirts sold over the three day event by selling out all 2500 in the first three hours of the meet. NWOC District Track Meet SizzlersWritten by Don Francis Saturday, 17 May 2008 11:29 Hits: 399 There exists within the track and field world a spirit unique that sets it apart from most other sports. A camraderie among contestants as if their event is their personal fraternity or sorority. Perhaps this is why I found such sanctuary wandering the NWOC District Track Meet on a gorgeous Wednesday and a sweltering Friday taking in every event like a child taking in a bowl of Jelly Belly jellybeans. Guessing but never knowing what flavor you'd find but relishing every single one.

Ducks to Dump Donald for DaffyWritten by Don Francis Saturday, 12 April 2008 10:29 Hits: 753 Had we been smart several years ago we might have seen the writing on the wall. RoboDuck was nothing more than the University of Oregon slowly distancing themselves from longtime mascot Donald and rolling out the beta test product. The straw that broke the camels back was the recent announcement of eliminating 400 parking spots in a venue known as the 'best tailgate atmosphere' in the West to make room for some silly 'If you build it they will come" pipedream spawned by neurotic and competitive idealists. Oregon has finally dumped the figurehead of Donald and parent company Disney and will now embrace Looney Tunes. Afterall, was Roboduck nothing more than a futuristic Daffy Duck gone Darth Vadar on us all? Don't take my word for this evolution of mascots. Go to the Looney Tunes website and look up the definition of Daffy Duck and it will describe the maturation of Daffy who in earlier cartoons was manic, explosive and unpredictable yet in later years become more self-analytical, competitive, peevish, paranoid and neurotic. "Th-th-thuffering thuccotash Porky, that sounds just like the DAF to me!" For some, a baseball field in the midst of what was the Autzen Stadium parking lot is a crowning jewel of returning to glory. I suspect for the majority of legionnaires du' canard it has the appeal and sensability of a toddlers day care center stuck in the midst of a retirement home. Oregon to "Bring It" for Schwab NW ShootoutWritten by Don Francis Thursday, 03 April 2008 19:32 Hits: 380 Last season the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout was nothing more than a turkeyshoot for both Washington girls and boys team who rolled into the Chiles Center and came away victorious. The Oregons boys team, who played without the talented twosome of Kevin Love and Kyle Singler, who were away at the McDonald's All-America game, battled gamely before falling 96-82 while the Washington girls took advantage of a stellar class and put a bushwacking on the Oregon girls and piled on for a 104-60 win. This Sunday the two Oregon squads have a good shot at revenge when they meet up at Chiles Center where the girls tip off at 4pm and the boys are slated for a 6pm contest. Admission is $10 for reserved seating, $7 for general admission and $5 for students.
The Oregon girls team this year features many of the players who took home medals at the state tournament just a few weeks ago. Most notable are the Southridge duo of Alex Earl and Michelle Jenkins who will play together for the last time against Prairie's Ashley Corral who just returned from the McDonalds Classic where she came away victorious in the Three Point Shooting Contest. Next year, Jenkins and Corral will team up for USC and face Earl who'll be a Sundevil for ASU. Portland State coach Sherrie Murrell will have two players, Eryn Jones of Meadowdale and Steph Egwuatu of Auburn on the floor Sunday and Brittany Kennedy of Lewis and Clark High has committed to Oregon State for next season. Shane Schutz of Napavine will coach the Washington girls while Oregon will hand the reigns to Gary McGrath who's daugher Amanda McGrath is the current coach at Westview. Consolation Games-Philomath vs Hidden ValleyWritten by Kelly Atkinson (Gollygal) Thursday, 13 March 2008 12:05 Hits: 168 Kicking off the early morning itinerary, The Philomath Warriors, after losing last night to a strong, defensive Stayton team, 56-33, will try to recoup and earn the chance to play for the Consolation Trophy in tomorrows final day of play. Having something to say about that will be the Hidden Valley Mustangs. Reeling from a grueling battle and loss against the Brookings-Harbor Bruins last night 45-38. They are hungry for an opportunity to redeem themselves and bring home some hardware. Winner of this game advances to the Consolation Championship tomorrow at 10:45, they will play the winner of the next game between LaGrande and Phoenix. Loser of this game goes home. Conditions Cancel PacWest Games of the WeekendWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Saturday, 26 January 2008 16:32 Hits: 69 Toledo-Regis Contests to be Rescheduled Coast range conditions caused Toledo to call of the crossing. Oregonprepsports.net's feature coverage of Saturday PacWest games falls victim to the winter weather as well, as word was received too late to relocate to cover the Creswell - Santiam Christian contests. 2007-8 Gatorade Oregon Girls Cross Country Runner of the YearWritten by OregonPrepSports.net Friday, 11 January 2008 10:24 Hits: 141 Henley's Taylor Wallace has been named the 2007-8 Gatorade Oregon Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.
