Team State and Team Metro put on a show

The 2011 State vs. Metro All-Star games were entertaining with explosive offense and many big defensive plays, worthy of All-Stars!  Under hazy skies and warm temperatures, the two teams split the games with Team Metro getting the best of Team State via the long-ball in game-1 and winning in a run-rule game, 14-4.  In game-2, Team State flexed it's collective muscle and had the resolve to pull out a 10-9 bottom-of-the-7th win.

Cascade Use Freshman’s Revenge Home Run To Repeat As 4A Champions

Rachelle_Coleman_DSC04332Cascade overcame their ace pitcher Jessica Slate being ill, and having their leadoff batter thrown out at the plate twice, to claim a 5-1 win, and repeat as the OSAA 4A State Champions.

And they got the big hit they needed from one of the most unexpected places, a freshman hitting in the seventh slot.

Sommer Coleman took one in the shin to start the fourth inning, and her freshman cousin Rachel (left) proceeded to immediately exact revenge on Henley pitcher Rylee Carleton, drilling the next pitch over the left field fence for a 3-1 Cascade lead.

“I was just stoked going up there,” R. Coleman said.

“It was the lift we needed,” Cascade coach Tim Ganfield said. “And to get that from a freshman, it speaks to the depth of our program. I’m thankful we are deep enough to have candidates to reload, and always have someone who will step up.”

That depth ultimately was the difference, as Cascade got 3 of their 5 runs, five of their 10 hits, and 3 of 5 RBIs, out of their 6 thru 9 slots.

“Most don’t expect that from a #7 hitter, or the bottom of the lineup,” T. Ganfield said, “but we know they can do it; we’ve seen it in practice.”

“We showed we are a 1-9 team today,” Slate said.

West Albany Edges Pendleton 7-6 In A Wild 5A Title Game

“Bulldog Softball Means Play Softball Like Bulldogs”

West_Albany_Score_DSC04234So said West Albany head coach Rocky Erner. In a game with 5 lead changes, and more wild plays and calls than one would normally see in a season of softball, it was playing like Bulldogs, figuratively and literally, that ultimately claimed the OSAA 5A championship by a 7-6 score for the Bulldogs.

“That’s what they have been doing all year,” Erner said, “with the bats. These girls just keep competing.”

Even when West Albany finally took the lead for the third and final time, it required fighting back, as Allison Smith had to come to after being knocked down and out, before she could score what would be the winning run.

West Albany (23-5 entering the championship game), the Mid-Willamette champions, lost their first 4 games, scoring only 2 runs in the process, and 5 of their first 8, but the Bulldogs have since run of 20 straight wins.

Pendleton (18-10 entering the day) finished tied for third in the 4 team Columbia River conference, and with a sub .500 record (5-7). The Buckaroos benefited as much as anyone to the expanded OSAA playoff format though. After losing 5 of their last 6 league games, Pendleton has gotten hot in the postseason, with 3 shutouts in their 4 wins.

Both are not so surprising turnarounds for a couple of the youngest teams to reach a title game.

The Bulldogs have only one senior, and start 5 juniors, 3 sophomores, and a freshman. The Buckaroos start both of their seniors, but also start 3 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 2 freshmen.

Century Hits More Effectively Than South Salem

Jaguars Claim Schools’ First Team State Championship

Early_Lead_DSC04177South Salem actually out-hit Century 10-8, but the Jaguars were more effective with their bats, and it translated to a 7-3 state championship win Saturday morning at the Oregon St. Softball complex.

Getting an early lead proved to be crucial, as Century, capitalizing on the experience of being in last year’s 5A title game, got off to a 3-0 lead before South Salem ever picked up a bat. It allowed the Jaguars to dictate tactics the rest of the way.

“If we can get the lead, we can usually protect it,” Century coach Kevin Brown said. “But oh boy, can South swing the bat! They are the best hitting team we have seen all year. Fortunately, we have Montana (McNeely), who I think is the best pitcher in the state.”

Regis Completes Sweep Of Western Mennonite

Ram Comeback Claims 2A Title

Force_Out_At_Home_DSC04148Taking a three run lead into the bottom of the seventh, and near the bottom of the Western Mennonite batting order, it appeared that Regis would wrap up the 2011 OSAA 2A Softball Championship with relative ease.

Emily Fahndrich wasn’t willing to go away quietly though, starting the inning off with an infield single for Western Mennonite, and Christy Rauch followed it up with a double to right field, bringing the tieing run to the plate, with no outs.

Michelle Schultz lined out to Emily Perlich for the first out, and though Kelli Christianson singled, the runners couldn’t move up. It brought the winning run to the plate, but it also set up a force at home, and when Jordyn Wright hit a bounder to third, the force at the plate, left, was an easy second out.

Perlich got Taylor Simpson to fly out to center field to work out of the jam, and start the party for the Rams.

“I was confident we would get out of it,” Regis coach Doug Highberger said. “Emily doesn’t let adversity affect her. We’ve survived a couple of errors before, and it’s a credit to Emily and the entire team for not folding.”

Glide Glides Past Horizon Christian

Early Lead Leads To Perfect Season

Shrum_Scores_DSC04058Easily the best weather of the season (warm, dry, sunny, and a light breeze; any ONE of those has made it a good day for softball this spring!) arrived just in time for the Championship games, and Glide wasted no time capitalizing on it.

McKenzie Shrum put the first pitch in play, and Glide unleashed some blistering team speed. Before the dust settled, the Wildcats had capitalized on three Hawk errors in the infield to open a 2-0 lead.

A little additional help early was all Marissa Duarte would need, as the Wildcat ace threw a two hitter at Horizon Christian, and Glide glided to a 5-2 win in the OSAA 3A Softball Championship game Friday at the Oregon St. University softball complex.

“It’s super important to get those early runs,” Duarte said. “It’s what gets our confidence up, but really, it gives you time to focus.”

Cougars Continue Post-Season Shutout StringClose_Play_DSC04013

Turner - Yamhill Carlton couldn't capitalize on uncharacteristic errors by Cascade shortstop Ashley Edwards in their first and last at bats, or take advantage of Rebecca Christensen's third inning leadof triple. In contrast, the second ranked Cougars clawed out a couple of unearned runs after the Tigers comitted consecutive infield errors in the opening inning. As a result, defending OSAA 4A state champion Cascade earned a fourth meeting with Oregon West rival Central on Tuesday, as the third ranked Panthers did some scratching of their own to earn a 1-0 win over Madras.

"It's going to be the little things that make the difference come this time of the year," Cascade coach Tim Ganfield said.

The two runs were all Cascade pitcher Jessica Slate needed to out-duel Yamhill-Carlton's Molly Smith. Slate, the reigning 4A Player of the Year, retired the Tigers' 2-3-4 hitters with Christiansen watching from third base to erase Yamhill-Carlton's best scoring threat, and keep alive the Cougar's streak of not having allowed a run in their three post season wins.
