Lady Buffalos Squeak By Lady Rangers

A two-run sixth inning wasn’t quite enough to overcome the Buffalos

ESTACADA, OR - Saturday was a beautiful day for softball at Coe Field. After back to back home runs by senior Hailey Clark and Freshman Rylie Canifax, it wasn’t quite enough as the Madras Lady Buffaloes beat the Lady Rangers 8-6.

The scoring started early for the Lady Rangers (8-5, 1-3 Tri-Valley League), as senior catcher Hailey Clark took the first pitch from Lady Buffaloes (8-5, 3-1) sophomore Lizzie Steuart and smashed it over the center field fence for an early 1-0 lead. “When I saw that pitch,” said Clark about the home run, “I was like, ‘No. She [Steuart] needs to be punished!”

Freshman Rylie Canifax wants a part of the action as well, as she took the second pitch she was offered for a solo shot to make it 2-0. “When I saw Hailey do it [hit her home run], I was like, ‘OK, now I have to do one,’”, said Canifax, talking about her home run in the first. “I saw the ball right down the middle, well, and took a swing at it and it went over.”

Madras got a run back in the top of the 3rd inning off of Sophomore starting pitcher Izzy Hagel to make is a one run game. In the top of the 4th, the Lady Buffalos took a 1 run lead, but they wouldn’t stop there. In the top of the 5th, Madras got 5 more runs to give them a 6 run lead.

The Lady Rangers would get two more runs in the 5th with a double by Clark and a single by Canifax, and 2 more runs in the 6th on another double by Clark, In the 7th, Freshman reliever Tessa Riedel struck a single but was unable to get anything else, falling 8-6.

“We had one bad defensive inning,” said head coach Mike Clark. “It hasn’t happened in a long time. It killed us. We really shouldn’t have lost the game. We’re a good team, we just have to figure out how not to make mistakes and win games.”

“Lately, I’ve been in a slump, even though I’ve been getting at least one hit a game,” said Clark, getting credit for 5 out of the 6 RBI’s in the game. “I want to get at least 2 hits a game. Heck! I want to go 4 for 4 every time! I knew today I needed to put it all together. I’ve been putting in a lot of extra time lately to make sure my swing is dialed in.”
