2016 4A Senior Softball All-Star Series

Many of the best Seniors at the 4A level, were gathered to represent the name across the chest for one last time before hanging up their jerseys for the last time in their prep athletic career.

 20160605 100604

Like so many years before, the series was held at The OSU Softball Complex Sunday June Fifth. The work John and Cheryl Kuehnel put in year after year, to give these ladies this great honor, is nothing short of wonderful.

The memories they create as these players gather with others they have battled sometimes all the way back to Kindergarten, make friendships that will and do carry on for a lifetime. May I dare to add that as a parent, the event even takes us back to the times we had the ol’ uniform on for the last time. I can bet I am not the only one that has had that flashback at these events even if just for a moment .

Umpires-  We also want to thank our wonderful volunteer umpires, who came out on donated time on a scorching day, just for the love of the girls and the game. I know I speak for all when I say I appreciate all you do throughout  the seasons, to give these young athletes the platform to flourish. They did an outstanding job on the day in tremendous heat to say the least. Our umpires were: Gail Winden, Alex Johnson ll, Kevin Roboskie, Heidi Dume, and Annie Bettelyoun who battled the heat for both games. Thank you on behalf of all involved.

Sponsors- We also wish to thank our wonderful sponsors, for their continued support of our young ladies. These companies have stood by our side for many years, and we owe the foundation of this event to you all. As patrons, please help support these companies that support us. They are: Fryes Action Athletics, Trask Mountain Outpost, and The Yamhill County Mushroom Farm.

Scholarships- The two winners of this year’s 250.00 awards were Makenna Stafford from Corbett HS, and Mica Harrington from North Marion HS.

Series- North Marion Varsity Softball Coach Rachel Camp, got the event kicked off in style. Camp joined the booth and gave an amazing rendition of our National Anthem, before joining her North West coaching staff on the field for the series.

Game one started off as a defensive battle from both squads featuring some outstanding pitching  from Scappoose’ Kendal Bailey, and Corbett’s Makenna Stafford. Balls were also put into play on both sides, but both squads backed up their pitchers allowing zero runs until the fourth inning. The North West squad opened up finally, as North Marion’s Tori Harper ripped a single to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

Harpers HS teammate Mica Harrington stepped up next and advanced Harper with a rip to left field. With no outs, Harper was able to advance to third on a base hit by another HS teammate Kelsie Henry, who reached first but Harrington was forced out at second.

The South East was able to keep Harper and Henry off the board while registering the second out, but that all changed when another North Marion Husky Shae-Lynn Tyson stepped to the plate. Tyson looked at two strikes before digging in, then ripping a shot to the base of the left field fence to score Harper and Henry for the first runs of the contest. Tyson would then later score when Scappoose Catcher Sage Harrison would stroke one before the inning came to a close. The South East went to work in the top of the fifth scoring two runs and make it 3-2, but the defense behind Bailey and Newport Pitcher Kateri Whitehead, stalled the complete come back as The North West took game one on the 3-2 final.

Game Two was also a defensive battle featuring starting pitchers Cyndi Dupper from Douglas HS, and Mica Harrington from North Marion HS. Stafford would once again come in later for The South East, and Bailey would close the contest for The North West,  after a solid outing by Harrington. Both teams played very well, but the pitching and defensive combinations limited runs in this one.

The North West was able to chip away here and there, as they would fight their way to a 4-0 final and a sweep of this year’s series. Congrats to all of you young ladies. We wish you all the best as you move on to the next chapters in your lives but never forget the name you once wore across your chest and I know I speak for all when I say, we were honored to watch you all grow in the game, and in life!
